.
I have been using a powerlifting style workout exclusively for about 18months or so. I take time off when I feel it is needed. I have also used ( in the past) a more conventional stlye as well. What I have found over the time for each method is that I respond more rapidly to a powerlifting workout compared to a regular workout, let me explain this. I used the basic 3sets of 10 reps for about 6 years, and while I gained some size and some strength, I felt something was missing. I found that over time this kind of workout got stale fast and I plateaued frequently. It was a depressing thing I would spend weeks in the gym trying to lift heavier, but felt I had to reach that 10 rep range to have a "good" workout. I also lifted 2x a week for each body part. Then about 2 years ago I decided, for various reasons, to lift heavy for a while. Here I would like to say that lifting heavy is a term with many levels of different meanings. For me lifting heavy means using a weight that cause me to reach failure at 6-8 reps, and while most people do not light that heavy, it is rather light in comparison to others at my gym. Does this mean that I am not lifting heavy? No, for my body it is heavy. So if for a squat you can only hit 115lbs but that is as heavy as you can get for 6-8 reps, Welcome to powerlifting! I found that I could go longer without taking time off as my workouts changed almost every week. Another good effect was that I lost Body fat while gaining weight LOL! I went froma waist size of 55 -57 to 48-49 and still gained 14 lbs. It was surprising. This style of workout is not for everyone, but if you have been stopped in your training this might be what you are looking for. Also if you have not done this style before it may well be something you could use to make gains like never before. A side effect of this traing is that your body requires more food, so cutting while on this is a little eaiser, you can use less calories and buren more off. At least I seem to be making good strides in that dept. I still weight 314, but my waist is still shrinking, and my iceps have grown almost a 1/2 inch already. SO in conclusion if you are looking for a change go to the gym and lift, heavy!
