I don't work directly the sore muscle but if I got sore legs (like today!) I work my upper body.
You need to give the muscle a little rest since it needs time to recover.
Now if I feel really sore all over I'll just do some light cardio (like a long walk with my dog!)

what my old weightlifting teacher said was ........if ur sore and feel like crap that day u can work out that body part( as long as its nto the day after give it atleast 24 to 48 hours rest) anyways if its still sore do some light work.......like if ur legs hurt so bad u can braly walk ....do somthing liek on a cardio or bick or somthing to get blood flowing to the muscle see if u can get that lictaic acid out(thats what makes u sore) get a good sweat going and take it from there......if it hurt to do le g pres try leg extensions if that hurts try somthing else if all else falls go home and take a rest the rest will do u more good than anything else

When you're sore, it's generally not just lactic acid, but the muscle not totally healed yet. Don't work sore muscles because you'll overtrain. You should wait until the muscle is fully healed, and then wait a day for overcompensation just to be sure before you work it again
