Ok, I have to write this as i am so tired of a few things. If you have not heard, or truly did not know then read here for the first time. There is no such thing (in my opinion) as toning. You either build muscle or not....period. Those that have fallen for the sales pitch on tv, that in "3 easy workouts a week" you can look like these models. What a load of donkey poop! One.....if you see "easy" to describe a workout it is not going to work. Two.....those people on these comercials train about 3 hours a day on average to look like that. I saw an actual "weight loss program" infomercial state, that you could spot reduce. In fact what he claimed is that all you have to do is take a picture and draw on it making what changes you wanted. Then his revloutionary trainign system will design a workout to target those areas! Anyone that has tried that is either more knowlegeable and is trainig right, or is still a couch spud. I have seen a lot of talk on this site and others about such training. The best thing to do is KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. Do the basic exercises ( I have listed them before) Bench, deadlift, squats, bent rows, chins, amoung others. Eat right drink a lot of water and it will happen. It is not EASY, FAST, and takes a lot of time, sweat, tears, blood, and work to get there. One other myth is this belief of some that all they have to do is lift somewhat heavy and POOF they are ready for the Mr Olympia! I get a chuckle over that one as someone that has lifted heavy for a while and still has yet to reach that level. I grow easy and tell you all that it takes a lot of work to add an inch on. So rest assured that you will not turn into the Hulk overnight. This ties into the myth that inorder to lose weight I must lift light for tons of reps and sets.....read some posts here most that have lost a lot of weight have done so by eating a lot and lifting heavy! Give it a try. Nothing compares to lifting 425 off the floor in a deadlift. So in conclusion, really, if it sounds to good to be true it is a fake!!!-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

Amen, Brother!!! I can't wait until they have one of those products that claim "Super-human strength in only 10 days or less" by drinking some sort of unknown liquid or something. I agree, Mutt... It takes hard work and determination to achieve your goals.-------------- --JBennett "I've up-ed my intensity.... now up yours!" "Pain is only weakness leaving the body." What is your opinion of the workouts prescribed here at Ft? I have worked out for several months and saw some pretty good results. I feel better at 42 than I ever felt at 25. Then I stumbled on to Ft by accident (Thank you God) and am now on week 2 of the progressive gains program. I really like it and look forward to every workout. By the way my diet is not perfect but thanks to you folks it is getting better. Lots of info to sort through I make small changes as I understand them better. You guys are helping tremendously.

I think for beginners and even more advanced trainers this site offers a great workout choice.-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

Like reading your posts mutt. Really gives food for thought in some of the things we do or think is the right way or the fast way. Indeed it is hard work, both physically and mentally. The eating healthy and often, and the rest in between. Thanks for the inspiration of the work ahead.

First of I would liketo say that I agree with you completely, there are no easy ways just correct ones. However the the notion of toning is true. Just for some trivial information toning does not relate to muscle size or a degree of leaness. Muscle tone refers to a muscle degree of contraction in a relaxed state. Many forms of weight training increase muscle tone, heavy lifting a little more than others. The muscle is not bigger, nor is there less fat around it, it is simply more noticable due to the fact that it is always partially flexed. I know this does not make a bit of difference to those of us who train regularly, but to those sedentary people with naturally low body fat but no visible muscle it accounts for alot of the initial cosmetic improvement caused by training. -------------- \\\\\"Education is the progressive discovery of our own ignorance\\\\" Patrick L. I understand what you mean but I think others get confused. You can be toned in that you have tight full muscle. But the context (and it is my fault i guess I should have explained) used was meant that toning replaces actual weightlifting. These books and shows mislead people to think that a rubberband can replace a dumbbell. And that will tone you....I hope that makes sense...Used for the average joe the word tone/toning is misleading at best.-------------- Eat More, Drink More, and Lift Harder than you thought you could, welcome to Becoming! |

Great post again Mutt. But for some people a rubber band can be very hard. Medical conditions or handicapps...But with weight training you have to increase weight when the reps get easy. How did things get so complicated. I like the KISS attitude. And for us women no worries about looking mannish. You have to be genetically geared to get that way and most women are not or take steroids. Most women look beautiful when in shape with weights.
