Due to a hectic day, i pretty much fasted yesterday- only eating 2 bowls of cereal. i am trying to gain weigh- muscle of course- and am a hardgainer. The fact that i missed an entire day of meals upsets me because I know that i will never reach my goal if stuff like this keeps happening. Every once in a while, it seems unavoiable (I'm very busy. I usually bring meals to school/work with me, but I always eventually blow it one day due to lack of time to cook and/or buy food). I am definitely a hard worker in the gym. i do work each body part once a week, and abs 2-3 times a week. I'm so tired of this, that I would probably consider taking steroids if it didn't involve sticking a needle in my ass. Anyway, I've been reluctant to use weight gainers, creatine etc., opting to only buy protein powder, but i have had it. i will do whatever it takes to get to my goal as quick as possible. i want 10-20 pounds of muscle, ripped abs, muscular build and low body fat. I'm 6'1 and 190 now (who doesn't, right?). However, because I am a student living in a metropolis with ridiculous expenses, i don't have much extra cash. What should i do? What should I buy? Also, I buy Vitamin Shoppe Brand protein powder, partially because it's cheap and easy to get, but partially because it has no artificial sweeteners. is that sufficient?

Make your own weight gainer. mix 1 cup oats, 2 tbsp. natural peanut butter, 1/2 cup whey, and a banana, with 4 tbsp. heavy cream. Add liquid to your consistency. Drink a couple of these a day, good solid food, you actually know what it is, with a tremendous amount of nutrient dense calories. But try to plan your food intake better. Prepare your meals in advance, like take a day and grill up a few lbs. of chicken breasts, make a bunch of veggies, etc., and separate them into servings in ziploc bowls, even freeze them. Then just grab 2-3 out of the freezer before you leave. I always carry a cooler in my car. Failing to plan is like planning to fail. Good luck to you.

BB1- Where do I get whey and how much is it? Is oatmeal good for oats? Heavy cream? I'm looking for lean muscle mass. Is heavy cream really desirable? I've never heard of that being good for you. Isn't there a lot of sugar and saturated fat in that?
Golden Gloves- It tastes good with strawberry gatorade. Alone it sucks because it's sugarless. But the chocolate flavor is good because it's sweetened.

Any gains from it that you can see how long have you been on it and how much protein is in one scoop precision engineered has 17grams per scoop I usually add 1 or 2 with milk and a few tablespoons of peanut butter.

Any good whey will do. Optimum nutrition has a whey out you can get even at GNC for 20 bucks. Adding heavy cream to your shakes is a great way to add calories. The fat in it is minimal, and unless you are on a diet, will work nicely and almost as well as flax oil.(remember, if not on a diet). Some saturated fats actually have a very positive effect on testosterone. This was a favorite of some very good Mr. O's, namely Frank Zane and Larry Scott. Here is some good reading, by one of my favorite guys. Way ahead of the curve, and credentials that are impeccable.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (acetyl carnitine) is a more bioavailable form of the amino acid L-Carnitine and is involved in many metabolic functions. As an antioxidant, acetyl carnitine can protect neurons from damage caused by superoxide radicals. Acetyl carnitine is involved in other aspects of neuronal metabolism and its molecular structure resembles the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Also, acetyl carnitine supplementation supports energy utilization through fatty acid metabolism in the mitochondria.

Quaker oats are great, or the store brand, just don't get instant.

I was writing to 2 people at once, somehow some of it got crossed. Forget the Carnitine paragraph, it does not pertain to you. Read the website, very eye opening stuff. Another case of "when something becomes conventional wisdom".

So I should add Oats into the shake as well? Will it make it lumpy and sickening?

Also Is the list of foods on the FT website a definite to follow. I find myself not following it since im always usually on the run. In the mornings Im always a sucker for a pop tart and a yoo-hoo and I am mad over tater tots. *Shame*

Use a blender. They blend up nicely.

You will never reach any kind of goals with yoo-hoo and pop tarts. The only thing you are doing is making yourself insulin resistant with that stuff, and this makes your post workout shake much less effective, as well as your overall being.

Thanks for the input. Should I just follow through on what foods to eat strictly on FT list or is their other foods I could eat.

BB1- I tried your shake, only with whey protein instead of whey, and it's not bad. I definitely didn't add enough liquid to it though, because it was like sludge. Can you tell me if egg beaters ca be added to a shake without health concerns, or do I have to cook that stuff? It would be so much easier if I could drink it.

Golden Gloves- It's 17 g a scoop, 41 scoops in a $22 2 lb. container. I haven't seen much gains, but that's probably due to my inconsistant eating habits as opposed to a poor protein.

Liquid eggwhites work well, great protein. They can be added directly to your shakes, they are ultra pasteruized, so no worries about salmonela or anything. You can adjust the ingredients to your taste. I sometimes like to make it as a "sludge", more of a pudding consistency, put it in the freezer for about a half hour or so, and a great pudding. Also easier to transport with you, no worry about spills or anything. By the way, whey protein is what I meant.

G'day,

Just trying BB1's shake now... couldnt find Heavy Cream at the supermarket (maybe they don't call it that here in Australia). It's pretty rich with all this cream though... i added full cream milk as my liquid of choice so maybe water is the go next time.

I'm gonna take your advice and have a couple of these a day - and by the way this first one went down i'm sure i'll be packing on the pounds in one form or another :)

Thanks for the advice BB1, much appreciated.

See if you can find Heavy Whipping Cream". Then use 2-4 tbsp. of that.

worked out the stats for the weight gain shake if anyone's interested:
(using 30g protein powder rather than half a cup, and normal salted chunky peanut butter rather than natural)

Calories: 917
Carbs(g): 101
fat(g): 38.8
Protein(g): 51.3

does that look about right, BB1?
I'm gonna keep downing these, twice a day as recommended. If you have any suggestions on other shakes or variations on this one I'd love to hear them - thanks!

I would use natural peanut butter, contains no sugars and hydrogenated oils. You can use any amount of protein you like, or other ingredients, make them according to your calorie needs. You can add a banana sometimes if you like. Be creative. There are a ton of things you can do. I have a paper full of them at home, I will post it tomorrow for you.

yeah that'd be excellent, thanks BB1

we were out of bananas this morning and so I had to go without banana for one shake - it was not as easy to drink, gonna make sure I don't run out of bananas again any time soon :)
