What would be the difference

I am trying to figure out a work out, and I have a question. What would be the difference in the effect of doing these two different sets?

3x8 to failure or
3x12 to failure

What would be the effects on fat burning vs. Muscle building?

If you can do 12 to failure, you should probably go up in weight to where you can only do 8 or even 6 to failure happens. This will put maximum overload on the muscle, thus inticing more strenghth/size. More muscle burns more fat also.

I am trying to lose the waist first, while gaining a little mass & tone. I am wondering about overworking and not having enough carbs and protein in the diet. You still say more weight less reps? Right now I am trying to clean up the diet, with the aid of the handy dandy nutrition center. I've already lost a couple of pounds in a week. I am not sure that was supposed to happen. Starting the work out monday. Thanx for the help.

Failure = can't lift it no more this set

You can't spot reduce and the waist/abs are usually one of the last places to let go of the fat. good luck though.
Ashunboy, to failure means that you can't possibly squeeze out one mor rep. This is usually between 3-7 reps. If I can get out 8 then I know I need to raise the weight the next time. You can also go to failure and then do a couple more 'assisted reps'. I do that a lot as my husband has been there to assist me.

Hey aleazar. People say more weight less reps because less reps build muscle and muscle burns fat. So the more muscle you have on your body, the more fat will be burned.
