I would say start with the machines, Cybex, or whatever kind your facility has. They are good for beginners (as well as pros) b/c they guide you thru the movement and they almost always have a diagram of the correct movement and show you what muscles are being worked (although they tend to exaggerate). Make sure the seat back and other pads are set for your height etc. to avoid injury.
