What brand of weight gainers do you use and should I be worried about all the grams of sugar in them? Also, when should I take it vs. when should I take just whey protein alone. THanks

I think the consensus here is to only use weight gainers if you absolutely cannot consume enough calories to meet your daily goal. My husband is on a gain cycly and needs 4000 calories. He drinks a shake with EAS Gain, that also has creatine in it, once a day on workout days. This brand is not one that is highly recommended on this site, but it was available and in our budget so that is what we got. Your whey protein is best consumed immediately after a workout, with a high protein meal about an hour later. Hopefully someone else will recommend a brand for you.

Leave the weight gainers in the store. If you need extra calories, there are some great "whole food" ways to get them and you don't need all those sugars and fillers. Simply for instance mix in a blender a half cup of oats(dry), 2 tbsp. natural peanut butter, 1-2 scoops of whey, and enough skim milk or water to make the texture you prefer(drink or pudding). Add 2-4 tbsp. of heavy cream for extra good fat calories. Do a couple of these a day if you need to, and voila', extra calories that you can use and you know what they are.

I do eat a lot of whole foods, but I was thinking that the weight gainers (even if i cut the serving in 1/2) would be great before and after a workout because of the high protein and high carbs with dextrose in them. Is it better to just take whey protein before and after a workout with some pasta?

No, after a workout, you don't want all that heavy food. Simply at this point mix your dextrose/malto/whey protein together in your amount to fit your bodyweight, and drink half immediately, then sip the rest for the next 30-45 minutes to steady bloodsugars for the day. Then about 30 min. after consuming it, have a well balanced meal. Your weight gainer should come in as the day goes on for extra calories.

And to Froshman, if you are not on a diet, heavy cream will do wonders in place of flax for gaining. Some saturated fats (and this is a small amount) have a positive effect on testosterone. And are also a great source for extra calories. This was a favorite of former Mr. O's Frank Zane and Larry Scott.

"Simply at this point mix your dextrose/malto/whey protein together"

Does whey protein have dextrose and malto in it? Or are these things you also have to buy?

No. Most whey proteins come as just protein and flavor. Some are carb free, others aren't.

Dextrose and Malto are dirt cheap. When you are done mixing them, you will basically have Cell Tech for a much cheaper price. Dextrose is $1.50 or so for 2 lbs.,Malto a bit more, $1.90 or so for 2 lbs. Go to http://www.dpsnutrition.com, and get it. You will even get a free shaker bottle. If not, you will have to get from a health food store or a brewer probably. Very easy to find.

Before training, just eat a good meal. Like if you train in the morning, oatmeal, eggwhites, eggs, and some cottage cheese will be nice. Oatmeal is good slow burning carbs for energy so you will have plenty of glucose, or alot anyway. After training, have your shake..dext/malto/whey. Use half of your bodyweight if you are trying to gain. Half protein, half the carbs split between dextrose and malto. If dieting, keep the protein but lower the carbs by 1/2.

Can you give me the actual links or names of the products from www.dpsnutrition.com because I couldn't find the ones you were talking about. Could you also tell me why a whey/malto/dex shake is better for gaining muscle mass than a weight gainer?

Because post workout, you need something fast. You are looking strictly for rapid recovery here, bringing blood sugar back up and secreting insulin to push nutrients into the thirsty muscles. Cortisol is running rampant, and you need to shut it off immediately. A weight gainer will not accomplish this.

The products you are looking for are by NOW nutrition. Here is the link to dextrose...http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?unique=4f359&catalog=vitaglo&et=3f64fa61&basket=5Ccee188d8003b093f64f2d546cf58de188d810a99bacf67378f0f893bbc450e9, and here is a link for malto...http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsearch?unique=4f39d&catalog=vitaglo&et=3f64faa5&basket=5Ccee188d8003b093f64f2d546cf58de188d810a99bacf67378f0f893bbc450e9

Thanks. My last question is (sorry if I'm bugging you) is that if this is similar to those who say gatorade should go with your post workout protein shake. Is the whey/malto/dext shake better than gatorade and whey?

The whey/dextrose/malto is better. Gatorade would maybe be next best, especially the dry mix, it has more dextrose in it. This is key, it is super fast absorbint, resulting in an immediate insulin rise. Malto is next best, which is why you want to both to continue the insulin to shut off cortisol. I think it best to drink half of your drink immediately, then the second half over the next 45 min. This way will level off insulin/blood sugars without giving too much at one time and keep from any possible fat storage with overproduction(too much at one time).
