So... I am starting an 8 week program from this site. I am trying to lose FAT, but it tells me to do 25 min of cardio each workout.

I thought you needed to do over 1 hour at a time in order to lose fat!!!

Anyone know what is right?

Thank you so much!

I have been doing MaxOT cardio 3 times a week. It's 16 min on stationary bike going as fast as you can. The idea is to go further and burn more calories each session. To push yourself so hard that you force your metabolism to catch up and keep burning fat well after you completed the exercise. I found out it here: http://www.ast-ss.com/articles/article.asp?AID=97

Contrary to popular belief fat is not lost in the gym it is lost in the kitchen. The pourpose of incorperatimg cardio inti a training program is to strengthen the cardiovascular system(lungs, heart, etc..) just as resistance training strengthens the muscles. However it is true that exercise burns calories the only way to lose fat is to burn more calories per day than you consume. The good news is that combining both resistance training & cardio can not only cause changes in the bodies performance & increase overall metabolism, it can actually cause a temporary increase in metabolism lasting up to 48 hours after exercise. In addition don't be misled into believing that you can get skinny by performing long sessions of cardio, the body is designed to lose little amounts of fat periodically throughout the day not in one session of activity as most believe(if this were true we could spend a day running & lose as much as we wanted LOL). Point being, watch the diet, exercise with weights & cardio 3-4 times per week & the results will come. Don't try to do it all at once, this will just lead to burnout & interfere with progress.

A good way to visulaize cardio as a fat burning tool is as an extension of your diet. You need a calorie deficit to lose weight, and you cannot keep cutting calories, you will eventually fall too far below your maintenance levels, and start losing muscle. Cardio is a way to actually keep your caloric intake higher, while still creating a caloric deficit. Not to mention the health benefits plfitness spoke of. But, forget the "fat burning zone" and it take 20 min. to start burning fat stuff. Too long on repetitive cardio and it is show that your body will actually start to store fat in places as a survival mechanism. RW spoke of HIIT, and he is right on with this protocol. Limit your standard cardio sessions to 25-30 min tops and do HIIT also. Then, above and beyond all, get your diet in order. This is what in the end will give you your results from what you do in the gym. Great posts above.

Thanks for the clarification on how cardio works plfitness. I should have known I didn't have it 100% right. Hehe, that's why I come here.
