Hey Mutt...obviously you have alot of support here and that is a great thing, but sometimes all the support in the world may not feel like it is helping. You can lift all the weight in the world and still, the sadness just lingers. Mutt, I battled depression for seven years, and I know that it takes its toll. It creates pessimism that snowballs into a cycle of self-doubt and despair. I'm not here to blow sunshine up your ass and tell you that everything will be alright, what I want to do is ask you a few questions that may enlighten your situation and hopefully point you in a good direction. First of all, have you been diagnosed by a professional with clinical depression. Have you seeked counseling/psychotherapy? Have you ever taken any medications. Last, but not least, do you or have you had any suicidal thoughts/plans? If you have been battling depression for ten years, then there is a cycle of some sort that keeps you in that frame of mind/thought process. If you haven't seen counseling or taken any meds, I strongly suggest you try it. I understand you are having occupation problems, but there are ways to get affordable counseling through your state's social service department. I understand JessicaR's post on denouncing medications, she had a bad experience with them. Meds are not the cure but can be part of a very effective therapuetic regimine, they lessen the symptoms so you can better deal with your emotions and thoughts. They do not change you or numb you, but some have temporary side-effects. So, finding that right med MIGHT take a couple of tries, with temporary side-effects lasting only a few weeks. Again, NOT A MAGIC BULLET, but can be very useful. Mutt I'm not attempting to counsel you in any way, but rather lend a hand and hopefully point you in the right direction. I am a licensed psychotherapist (CSW), but I use many different approaches to diferent people's needs. If you have any questions or if you want to talk, shoot me an e-mail in my mail box. My thoughts are with you. Feel better, JIM

No I have had cousenling before and while it worked for a few years I felt it was part of my problem. I went off them and have had a few bouts of lesser depression. Nothing I could not handle. I am fine now I got a new position within my company. And that was the main issue. I thank you for the offer and if I need to talk to someone I will email ya!

Not a problem. I know all the signs of a bad case of it and would never let it get that far, though this last time I did have some rather dark thoughts at times, but my wife and son and God pulled me thru it. But I will keep you in mind! LOL

Now I know a little more about your support system...wife, son, God. Thats great to have. In my research, I have found that people who suffer from depression or any other psychosis, and they have a strong sense of spirituality, they are able to cope better with stress and deal with depression better. Thought you'd like to know that little tid-bit. JIM

I have had this ever since I was born. I grew up with a mother that has bipolar among other things. She has has shock therapy, 2 brain surgerys and every drug combo known to man. She was in and out of the hosiptal from the time I was 10 yrs old to now (I am 33). So I know a little bit more about this than most. I was what is called an "old soul". By this is that I did not feel like a kid for the most part, oh I played and such but inside I thought differently. I was happy and sad like most and it was the end of the teen years that I had to finaly take meds. That really was not my choice, but it helped, for a time. I spent 4 years on them. In that time I gained 75lbs, lost some of my eyesight and the enamel on my teeth weakened. All due to the drugs. I woke up in college and realized that it was not working. So I stoped them myself(slowly) and started working out. Lo and behold that I really came alive for the first time in a long time. Since then 10 rs now I have been fine. This last bout was just a combo of stresses that I could not deal with. So I retreated a little. I have a great support system in my wife and friends. The poster (null) I lost a good friend because of him being bipolar and just giving up finally (he hung himself) so I am so glad to hear your husband got help. Please email me if you need to talk about this. I know how it is and what you are going thru! Thanks for you support!
