I've been on a weight gain programme now for abbbout 3 months, and have put on nearly a stone. unfortunately I can't tell by looking at myself if I still look really gangly/thin, or if I've clearly gained muscle... nobody's ever said anything.

I have however noticed I've lost my 6-pack, which I've been working on, and it's been replaced by fat... nice!

Even on the "cleanest" gain cycle, some fat is to be gained. This is inevitable by the amount of excess calories needed to gain. You can help to keep it to a minimum with a cardio assist, and the cleaner your diet the better. Unfortunately, another aspect of the gain will be disappearence of abs. If you gained good muscle, when you diet you will see it and look better.

In addition to what bb1 stated you must remember about the effect of percieved self image. Whenever a great deal of weight is lost or gained the individual still sees themselves the same. A couple of good ways to help with this is to take periodic pictures & body fat assessments to use as comparisons. Hope this helps.

thanks people. I really should take periodic measurements, plus I was aware gaining fat would be inevitable when tying to gain weight. Just a little disappointing, because although I know it isn't, it feels almost like a step backwards.
Still things seem to be going okay.

Once again thanks.
