I've been trying to figure out just exactly how many grams of carbs i should have in a day and in what ratio to proteins and fats. I'm 6'1, weight 205lbs with just above average build. I'm trying to lose about 15lbs of fat but i don't want to lose my muscle. I still actually want to put on some slowly. I did the nutrition plan and it suggested 3400 cal, 265g protein, 518g of carbs and 71g of fats.. isn't the carbs total a little too high? any suggestions to my totals would be greatly appreciated. (including ratios)

The carbs are way too high. In most cases, anything over 300g is excessive unless you're an endurance athlete or have a physically intensive job.

I'm doing Atkins. I have had plenty of energy going as low as 20 grams of carbs a day!
Since you are a guy ;), it will be a lot easier for you to lose fat and gain muscle. You could probably do it just by upping your cardio and weight workouts. I know my hubby lost a couple inches around his waist just by taking a co worker to lunch with him and splitting the burrito. He made no other dietary changes other than to stop eating the instant he felt full.
You could even try eliminating sodas, beer, white bread, and pastry/junk type foods first. That could very well do it right there.

The zone diet is based on 40-30-30 ratio. You can try those numbers.

Diets in and of themselves all have some merit to some people, that is one may work for you, another for another person, etc. But the key to long term weight loss and toning is healthy exercise along with it. Incorporate resistance training, a cardio program to go along with your macros. As far as yours go, as Mackfactor says, your carbs are way out of range with your stated goals. A good starting place for you may be the 40/30/30 diet. But, first thing to do is clean your diet up. Eliminate all processed foods, sugary and starchy foods, even those sports drinks. Anything that would increase blood sugar. Once you have done this, figure your maintenance calories, and then you have a place to work from. A good site for that is www.fitren.com/res3artp.cfm?artid=46. Good luck to you.

I am doing Atkins. I do at least 1 hour cardio 5 times a week. 2-3 days a week that is running. I also lift 2 hours a week.
I eat 25-35 grams of carbs a day. I feel great. I get loads of protien and fat, and the inches are coming off faster than I would have believed.
Hubby is already at goal weight so he maintains by cutting out the pasta, rice, white breads and flours, etc. Only diet sodas and sparkling waters. Mashed potatoes are a special treat for him, along with Mexican dinners. He eats about 150 grams of carbs a day and is in great, trim shape.
I tried a high-carb, low fat last year. It about killed me. I worked out the same amount but I was always starving. I had major cravings and all kinds of physical problems.
Then this year as a 1-month experiment I went to a low-carb, high fat diet. I undid 7 years of overeating and body abuse in 12 weeks. I feel and look better than I have EVER.
Which way of eating am I following now? LOL
Before I did my 1 hour run tonight I ate bacon and sausage (about 1 hour previous). I had plenty of energy for my run and could have kept going. I feel great now.
I never feel deprived or like I am missing anything. If I ate the high-carb diet the government recommends I would be sick and miserable all the time.
Do an experiment. 2 weeks each way of eating. Keep track of how you feel, but be sure to stick it out the whole 2 weeks. If you are hooked on carbs like I was the first couple days can be pretty rough. But once you're "detoxed" you will feel better than you have ever!
I'm a big advocate of letting the low-carb way of eating do all the converting for me. :)
