I could really use some input on this problem Ive been having... First of all I'm a very active and fit individual. Im male, 5' 8", 155lbs and I play semi-pro baseball, Racquetball and played both soccer and baseball in college for the last 4 years. Anyway, about a year ago I started finding that shortly after I began my workouts my blood sugar levels dropped dramatically to the point where after 10 or 15 min. I'd have to stop and feed myself or I couldnt continue because my hands would be shaky and I feel almost like passing out. This has continued to occur aspecially when I start to push myself during anything involving cardio, like Racquetball or even distance running. I talked to Dietitian and after telling them what I eat during a the day (LOTS of food) they told me that I was certainly getting enough cal's so they recommended that I see a doctor because its possible I may be a type 2 diabetic. This is getting really frustrating to me because its destroying my workouts and Im struggling physically during times and in ways I shouldnt be. Any opinions will be helpful!!! |

I had episodes last year similar to diabetes where my sugar levels would drop off after a meal to a dangerous point. I frequently ended up in a "drunk" kind of state. I had to dramatically change how and what I was eating. The biggest thing for me now is eating my little meals 5 times a day (big amounts of food affect blood glucose) each meal and snack needs to have protein, carbs and a little fat. Fruit or any sugar (pop or candy) by itself makes me sick. It's fine with a meal, though, but I don't have pop or candy often. Try getting yourself on a diet meant for diabetics and see if you feel better. I've gone from being totally debilitated several times weekly by my blood glucose problems (hypoglycemic tendencies) and I now train 6 days a week with no attacks in over six months. Good luck, drop me an e-mail if you need more info.-------------- Think you can or think you can't; either way you're right--Goethe |

When you say 'drunken' state, is it like you are dizzy and have to lie down for a while, kind of like room spins?
I have episodes like that (when I am not following my eating plan) and have tried to describe it to so many people. I am pretty sure it is blood sugar issues, but just curious if that is how you feel. Like you can't keep your head up or eyes open? |

I get the drunk feeling too. I've actually never been drunk, but that's what I imagine it to feel like. a little blurry, room spins, just sort of a "foggy" feeling in my head. and my limbs also feel very heavy. I think many people get these episodes to varying degrees...

I had that drunked feeling with the dizziness ect, but I also became totally stupid. My brain knew what was going on, but it couldn't control my body. A friend told me that during one of my attacks I crawled around on the floor, growling and pretending I was a tiger. I also often felt like I weighed 500 pounds and couldn't move. It's because your body has run so low on fuel that it can't function properly.-------------- Think you can or think you can't; either way you're right--Goethe |

Dehydration can do some weird stuff to you too. With me I think it is low blood pressure. I feel dizzy and my ears ring and my vision is messed up.-------------- ~Victoria~ ...There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.--Beverly Sills |

Wow, well at least it is reassuring that these things happen to other people. I am kind of phobic that way, thinking that there is something very very wrong with me but that no doctor will understand. I think I can definitely trace the episodes i have had to blood sugar levels being off. i guess there is no end to the benefits of eating and exercising....-------------- Challenge + Consistency = Results |

As a Type II diabetic, you have described the symptoms of a low blood sugar drop and you should see a doctor as soon as you can. It is not the end of the world should you find out you are. I keep glucose tablets with me at the gym in order to maintain a correct sugar level after I work out. I also carry my blood sugar kit with me at all time. If there is any problems I just check my sugar and see if that is the problem. Good luck to you! and let us know what you doc says.-------------- I will lift my own weight someday!!!!! Hi,
I also have problems with my blood sugar being too low. A lot of times it would be after eating a lot of food, or after eating something with sugar in it (including fruit). I would get the symptoms of dizziness, nausea, shaking, feeling unable to think and out of it,etc. There were a bunch of different instances where blood tests showed hypoglycemia (and also anemia), but I had a very unresponsive doctor who didn't take it seriosuly and gave no advice. After a week and a half of trying to reach her on the phone after some tests, she said that it "probably" wasn't a big deal because I am bulimic and it's probably just part of that..Umm, for one thing I am a recovering bulimic and I eat pretty healthy most of the times nowadays with the occasional slipup. I think that the bulimia might have initially caused it, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. I still am dealing with it on a daily basis and it is very frustrating. I have been looking up websites on it on my own and talking to a few people who I know are hypoglycemic, and I agree that the more mini meals versus 3 large meals a day works better, as does combining things with protein. Good luck! Julia |

Hi I am new here ... not sure If I can even post this.
I have hypoglycemia and was tested in the office nothing showed up. I was sent on a fast thingy and the low levels showed up when i passed out in the hospital it is very serious. I have been close to a comma! I get the dizzy , lips feel tingly much like when the dentist gives you a shot.. the drunken feeling can go farther .. I have been passed out for 30 minutes and longer... I can hear eveyrone around me and its scarry!!! Im on here today because I want to make changes in my life! Go to your doctor find out what you have so you can work with the dietican and figure out what your body needs.. not eveyrone is alike .. I had to write down when my dizzy , numbing feelings happened... believe it or not .. I use to drink a glass of grape juice for breakfast my whole life and I cant now. If i do by 10 am im passed out .. my body from sleep time to motivational time is to low on sugar to drink juice in the morning. everyone is different Get it checked ... I coudl go on and on... I also passed out behind the wheel of my car... |

Sounds like hypoglycemia to me..I have had it for 10 years now and just got it under control the past year. The symptoms are exactly as you described..and when you get like that it means that your blood sugar has probably reached a very low point...There isnt enough glucose to sustain brain function and that is why you get the dizziness etc..It CAN be dangerous if you keep passing out. I learned to recognize the subtle symptoms long before it got to the point that I felt I was going to pass out.. You have to follow a strict regime in order to get this under control...Here is what works for me 1.Eat every 3 hours..Breakfast,snack,lunch,snack,dinner,snack. 2.Eliminate ALL REFINED SUGARS and stay away from high GI foods, such as grapes, bananas, any fruit that tastes really sweet, and stick to fruits, like apples, pears, mangos, anything that has a fairly fibrous skin....Getting rid of refined sugars is very important, and this includes honey, and fruit juices It means checking food labels more often, but its worth it. 3.Stick to whole grains, protein, veg and some fruit...Protein is very important to hypoglycemics...it takes longer to digest and so doesnt cause a glucose rush. 4.Eat breakfast within 1 hour of waking...this is important..your blood sugar is lowest in the morning and you need to bring it back up...whole grain cereal, protein shake, apple. 5.Eat protein/carb before you work out and again after you work out, perhaps some cheese/apple. 6.Take a chromium GTF or chromium picolinate supplement daily. Your body is responding to years of filling it with crap...its had enough and is now forcing you to change your eating habits...it took me 6 months of changing my lifestyle to go without a episode..but I have achieved it.And because I NEVER want to have another low blood sugar episode I will stick to these diet changes like glue Good luck! |

I went to the endo and she said I have insulin resistance. I don't really think I do with my blood test results. Anyway I get a lot of these symptoms you guys are talking about. The one thing I hate is that I love to run and now after I do run I get this wiped out feeling. It can happen within an hour or it can happen the next day, but I feel like I cant move off of the couch. I feel like I have been sprayed with raid or something. I also get this horrible prickly stinging feeling in my hands and strangely it is usually at night.

If blood glucose is at all compromised, performance will suffer, and afterwards will be even worse. I would suggest if you don't now to start sipping a dilluted protein/glucose mixture while working out. This will go a long ways to nipping this problems, as blood sugars can drop fairly dramatically with hard workout, and if you have problems anyway, it will be much worse.-------------- Strength and Honor! |
