Does anyone have a good brand to take for protein shakes. I am looking for more protein than carbs but also trying to watch the total calories. The Atkin Shakes seemed to fit me well but I just wanted to get opinions.

I would think you are spending a lot more money than you have to by buying the pre-mixed protein shakes. I simply buy the powder in vanilla and mix the shake myself and put in whatever flavor extract I feel like that day. I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey. For one scoop it is 110 calories, 22 protein, 2 carb, and 2 fat. It costs me $17.03 US Dollars for a 2lbs tub of powder. I use 8oz water per scoop. There are MANY different brands and types out there with different mixes of protein. I'd suggest visiting a health store and checking them out.

The Atkins shakes are loaded with fat. Gwindalyn, I think I'll try that Optimum stuff next time, looks like it's pretty good and reasonably priced.

You can get pretty creative with the powder. :) I've used it to make cookies, pancakes, bars, and all kinds of shakes. Sometimes I put ice in it and blend it up, or fruit, or yogurt, or cottage cheese, or natural peanut butter. LOL! The options are limitless.

I made peanut butter "candy" the other night by mixing natural peanut butter w/ vanilla whey and a handful of Kashi Crunch; it really was pretty good!

Oh wow, JessicaR, do you have a recipe for that peanut butter candy? Thank you everyone for your advice. I went into GNC before writing this email and they did not have much to choose from so I was getting confused.

GNC BRAND WHEY PROTEIN its cheap, and comes in a huge tub for $31.00. It comes in chocolate, vanilla. one scoop will give you 100 cal,20g of protein, 5g carbs, 1g fat. Trust me it will last you 1-2 months depending on your protein intake.

There are some good recipes in the Specific Diets and Nutrition board. And I have found that Osco Drug has good sales on all the supplements and protein powders. I got the 1# Optimum 100% Whey for under $7 and the Pro Complex for under $9 this week. They have a lot of different brands.

4 eggs whites
1/2 cup of oats
1 scoop chocolate whey

326 calories, 36g protein, 30g carbs, 5g fat

Mix all the ingredients into a bowl. Heat up a non stick pan. Spray some Pam on the pan. Cook and eat. I use the Atkins sugar free syrup with mine. I've also used vanilla whey and added in cinnamon & vanilla extract too.

Sorry, I didn't see your question until today, Lucy - I don't have a recipe for the peanut butter candy; I just put a blob of natural pb in a bowl, add vanilla whey (mine is sweetened w/ stevia) until it makes a clay-like substance (sounds great huh? LOL) then knead in some Kashi crunch and shape it into a few little balls. The whey and the Kashi makes it sweet enough for me but if you want it sweeter (and not so dry) you could add some honey - will raise the carbs though of course. You could also roll them in coconut, sesame seeds, or something like that or use almond or cashew butter. I just rolled mine in more whey to keep them from being really sticky.

Don't want to get your hopes up, this isn't Russel Stovers but if you want something sort of sweet w/ protein and not too bad in the carbs dpt it's worth a try!

Thanks so much! I am going to try these recipes. I bought this cappucino flavored protein mix and it isn't the whey that I really wanted and I cannot return it so I am going to try to use it to my advantage. Thanks all!
