Ok.. I feel silly bringing this up.. the reason seems obvious to me. Anyhow, when I do lifting I yawn like mad! You're probably thinking I must be holding my breath during heavy lifts, thus starving myself for oxygen. Sounds right to me.. but I'm pretty good about breathing during my lifts. I've had this symptom for a long time and it pops up whenever I really push myself physically. I don't experience any light headedness.. like I might if I were lacking oxygen. I'm not taking any crazy suppliments.. just some MR's and protein suppliments. Any ideas gang? I feel just silly being in the gym.. drenched head to toe in sweat.. heart a pumping.. and yawning every minute.

Same here. Why DO we yawn anyway? What causes it? Being tired? Lack of oxygen? Boredom? Hmm. With me yawning in the gym it might be lack of oxygen. I do tend to hold my breath when struggling to get a weight up. Noirutla has to always tell me to breath. LOL!

The exact mechanism of yawning is still unclear, but it is commonly believed amongst doctors that yawning is caused by a lack of oxygen in the air, or alveoli of the lungs. Your body produces a yawn in an attempt to increase the oxygen intake into the lungs. The function of alveoli is to diffuse oxygen into the bloodstream and take carbon dioxide from it to be exhaled.

Yawning also occurs when you are tired, bored, or generally fatigued because your breathing tends to slow down under those circumstances and your brain is telling your lungs that it needs more oxygen and your lungs respond by making you take a deep breath (yawn).

Yawning is actually your bodies way of drawing in needed oxygen. Yawning in the gym when not tired is typical.

Thanks all, that's good to know because I do it too. I figured people were probably thinking I just tumbled out of bed and came straight to the gym.....at 4pm! Here's another one: when I first started working out, 2 years ago, my nose would run the whole time I was at the gym. I don't notice it anymore, but there was another woman that had the same problem. Anyone know what's up with that?

The runny nose while exercising is not uncommon either. When you start exercising there’s an increase of blood flow, which warms your entire body. Your body temperature increasing and thus the increased difference between your body temperature and the temperature in the gym is basically the cause of it. As you continue to exercise, you inhale the colder air in the gym and eventually the cool air begins to condense in your freshly warmed nasal passages causing your nose to start running. This is obviously more likely to happen the colder the air in the gym, or if you run outside in the winter. Some people are more likely to observe this phenomenon than other due to different body chemistry.

drio - Yawning IS contagious, though nobody knows why. My personal theory is that we humans are flock animals, we tend to imitate other peoples behavior. This is also seen amongst groups of women who cohabit. After awhile their menstrual cycles are synchronized to match that of the dominating female. Another example of this is itching. I’m an archaeologist so I spend a lot of my time in the field surrounded by poison ivy and although I myself have a high tolerance to it whenever somebody mentions poison ivy everybody start itching. Robert Provine, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County has done a lot of studies involving yawning and other psychologically triggered phenomena and he has come to the conclusion that “When you see someone yawn, you’re initiating a chain reaction of biology, so whatever changes in our body are brought about by yawning, are synchronized in everyone that’s doing it.”

That menstrual cycle thing is true. In college I had two different roommates two different years, and both times ours were in synch. Growing up mine and my mom's were the same way as well.

That itching thing reminds me of when someone starts talking about bugs or spiders, etc, I start feeling bugs on my skin only to find there is nothing there. LOL! Glad to know I'm not just wacko.
