I was just wondering if any of you guys do martial arts, and it so what sort of conditioning program are you on. Do you have any good sites I could check out to learn more and maybe even find conditioning exercises? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to do thai boxing, and we did press ups, sit ups and other various exercises, like running with a sandbag, and doing slow pressups, and holding pressup position just off the floor. We also had to hold our legs at 6" off the floor after killing ourselves with situps. We did other stuff, but it's kind of hard to explain. We also did conditioning on our shins as well, but i don't think that's what you mean by conditioning. I can't really do martial arts anymore because i'm always aching from either my leg workout, or my upper body one :(
Hmm, i may find a day in the future to do martial arts...

what martial art do u do rainmaker?
it does make a difference, because for example in taekwondo (however you spell it) you mainly use your legs to attack and arms to defend where as in other martial arts its the other way round.
i do karate. there we do push ups on our knuckles which really harden them. strong abs are important in martal arts.
i like the site www.24fightingchickens.com -click on the link 'shotokanplanet' at the bottom of the page. there isn't anything on workouts there though

As a fellow martial artist, I can offer you some advice as well. The best site so far is http://www.planetjubei.com/mazone.

This place has a HUGE database with tons of drills, techniques, strategies, tricks/flips and such things :) I am sure you will find alot of info there!

Therainmaker Hi. Dave here. I study the martial arts as well. My coming to ft was for the conditioning through weights to add to my normal stretching and conditioning exercises. Some great books to read on conditioning can be found in a book store, Bruce Lee's books are great as he was one for cross training, that include weights, isometrics, and so forth. There is one exercise that we do called the role court. It involves breathing, and over all body conditioning before we actually train. This is how it goes. Hidu squats Stand feet shoulder width apart hands out in front of your body. Now squat pulling your arms in towards your chest and breathing in,simaltanously bringing your arms down to the side of your body. As you rise up breath out. Try doing 10 to 15, see what results you get. The next is a form of japanese push ups, push up position legs spread, hand slightly in front of you shoulder width apart. Dip down into the push up, arch your back, and look straigth ahead, something like a cobra, now instead of rolling back into to position in japanese push ups, return the same way you dipped into the push up. The movement is like a peice of paper floating down to the ground. This is great for shoulders, back, and a good stretch in the legs. Do at least 25 and see what happens. Again breathing is the big peice in all conditioning exercises Breath ou as you lower into the push up breath in as you come back. Then lie on your back, do the iron board, which is lift feet 6 inches off the ground as well as head and shoulders, this is for the ab region. Then (minus any neck injuries)do a wrestlers bridge, this is going up onto your head like doing a reverse push up. Try these as a unit and see what happens. It really has helped me both physically and cardio. You can then also add any other conditioning exercises that you have both for stretching and toning. Isometrics is great, reverse breathing is also very helpful for strong abs etc. Dave

Best thing to do is stretch. Nightly or as regularly as you can. I know a few of the people I used to train with used a machine which basically stretched your legs out wide and you used the central grip to pull yourself more into the stretch. Seemed to be quite effective. But simple stretches did it for me. See how you go.

What styles of Martial Arts do you guys study?

I'm learning Okinawan Kenpo with Jujistsu and Tae Kwando mixed in. I've studied Hawaiian Kenpo and Bushidokan in the past.

I suggest keeping your kicks low. It is nice to be able to kick someone in the head but in self defense it leaves you in a vulnerable state. You lose a lot of power when you go above 90 degree angle on your kicks. Plus it is slower and you can lose your balance easier. I study Okinawa Sheri Tai and Kenpo.

I agree. Don't kick them in the head unless you have already knocked them to their knees or to the ground.
