Chin ups are one of the most difficult things to do I'll bet, with frontwards hand grip. Any of you do them regularly? I did four today to impress the kiddies :D Held one for 30 seconds or so :D Dips still just about as hard for me though, 3 or 4 and I'm out.

I include weighted pull-ups in my back routine all of the time. This exercise is a great strength builder.

YEAH; The chins can be pretty extreme. Most people in general cant do any.
Cable pull downs will give you the same work-out w/the added ability to adjust the weight.

Yes I've read that if you can't do chin ups and you want to get to a point where you can, then just start doing cable pull-downs until you get to a weight that lifts you off the floor...then of course you're ready.

I'm currently doing strength work on pull ups right now.
If you're looking to get a big back, pull ups are among the best exercises available. Unfortunately pull downs don't give you quite the same workout that pull ups do, but they're a start. A good method to get you more into pull ups is to do negatives. Use a stool or just jump to get yourself up on the bar and then slowly lower yourself. That'll help develop some strength and you can get more and more pull ups over time.

I put one of those chin up bars in my bedroom door. So each time I passed it I would try and do a pull-up. Two months ago I could do one single pull-up and sometimes two if I really tried. Today I did eight! For me that is a big change.

Nice! Before you know it, you'll be strapping weight onto your ankles first :D

I think losing weight makes your lats stronger since the more weight I lose, the more chins I can do :-P

If you work out with a parter sometimes it helps if he or she gets hold of your ankles and takes some of the weight off so that you can get an extra reps.

I hadn't tried doing pullups for a long time after starting my gym routine. (but I had remembered them being quite hard) A main focus of my workout is back muscles (with lots of pull-downs) I jumped up on a bar a couple weeks ago just for fun between some reps.. and started cranking them out! It was great! And came as quite a shock to myself. I wish I could put a bar in my appartment somewhere.. yet.. being 6'2" with low ceilings... =( I suppose I could always bend my knees! =)
