A lot of whether you get lean and big depends on your diet. You will build muscle lifting heavy, and that helps burn additional calories.
A lot of the guys I know who are bodybuilders don't do cardio until they are in the cutting phase before a competiton. They gain mass and some bodyfat, but shed it fairly quickly. Their reasoning is that cardio will burn muscle off and that they are training as heavy as they can and need all of their energy for that.
I would advise doing at least 20 minutes three times a week for the health of you cardiovascular system. It can be low intensity, and shouldn't affect your mass gain.
To get elan requires consistent diet and some additional cardio - woemn are made to hold onto fat, not lean out as easily as men, so it requires a little more effort on our part.
Good luck!
asimmer ... what would be an example of a cardio workout that those bodybuilders would go through before a competition? is it more intense than the 20 minutes you suggested? i'm trying to figure out a way to get cut without going on a diet.
