I read recently in Muscle and Fitness that doing trunk twists has no positive effect on obliques. However, my FreeTrainer workout schedule has me doing them upright and bent over. Can someone please give me some input as to the positive benefits of doing these?

Thanks
Chip

I personally believe that oblique training is not helped much by twists. I happen to think they are a total waste of time and valuable energy. I have never known anyone to benefit in any way from them including myself. I feel if you do heavy/weighted ab work, whether rope crunches, whatever, and lower ab work like weighted leg raises, then with proper diet(this is key), your obliques will show. The only other thing I may do for them is about every 3rd time on heavy rope crunches, superset a set with a bit lighter weight going side to side for 10 reps each side. If you have a torso rotation machine in your gym, this can help if done correctly. Most use this for the wrong thing, thinking they can work their "love handles". Concentration on the obliques using this can help. But then, in the end, diet is the answer.
