Ok, today was my leg workout... I did squads on a seated machine, leg curls and leg extension.
I looked at the free weight area and there were 25kg, 35kg, 45kg and 55kg barbells. I did squats--12 reps with the 25kg barbell. This was way to easy, so I tried the 35 kg one, and couldn't actually lift it over my head!!! SO I couldn't do it. The rack is such that one can't simply place it on without actually lifting it back over my head and placing it on (if you see what I mean??)
I wasn't happy about this because my legs are really in need of getting BIGGER!! :)
I did some squats on the Smith machine which was okay, but this apparantly isn't as beneficial as the barbell.
Advice please!!

You only have fixed barbells where you can not add or take off weight? In that case not sure what to say. Most gyms have a plain babrbell where you add different plates on to it to add or subtract weight. If you do not have that ability stay with the smith machine for now it is ok in place of reg squats.

I would say MUTT is right, stick with the smith machine. For your legs to get bigger your gonna need to keep going up in weight.
Bye the way, you'd probably ought to find a better rack. Lifting the weight over you're head is no way to do a squat.

When I say "Lifting the weight over my head" I mean to actually get in the correct position to start squats.

Whats your profile cjtyson? Maybe you should do some more upper body work, traps and delts if youre struggling to clean and jerk 35kgs.
You dont want your legs to grow and leave your upper body unproportionately smaller.
What do u mean you cant get in the correct position?
Maybe consider going on a shoulders, back n chest program till you can clean and jerk your own weight.
Lots of military presses, standing and bent over rows, benching, and deadlifting.
Because ideally, you want to be at a level where you can start squatting with a barbell, rather than gaining more reliance on the Smith machine.
