So about 10 days ago (friday) I slipped on some ice and twisted my knee. I took the weekend off from training, then got back into it. I didn;t do too much training on it. On sunday 3 days ago I did a half-marathon- my knee was more or less fine until mile 12 then it just became unbearable. I managed to finish but it ws a terrible race for me. On Monday I could hardly walk. yesterday was better in the morning but got worse towards the evening. Now it is twingey. I have done no training (except for 2x30min cycling on monday as the metro here is broken down and I had to get to my spanish class).
I am icing it as often as I can, and putting ibuprofen gel on it. How soon can I train hard again? What leg exercises can I do to strengthen my knees. Lunges really hurt my knees so please don't suggest those... I am currently only squatting with a Smith machine as far as legs go.
Any advice gratfeully received.

knees require lots of attention and a minor injury could be a lot worse than you think. I would see a doctor.

If it isn't torn.. you could do leg extensions and leg curls, both with very light weight and work through as much range of motion as you can with out too much pain. Keeping it moving will help you to not lose too much ROM.
You should also ice it, then gently stretch it, then ice it, then move and stretch it (continue this pattern for as much time as you can). This technique is supposed to help injury heal faster and amintain function.
Knees are very unstable, so if it is still bothering you in a week you really should get it looked at. Running on it probably wasn't a great idea, but there you go.
Good luck.
