If you want to grow big and defined, ideally, should you lose fat first or build mass first?

One should get leat lean first, to get defined, then you gain to build the mass. Remeber, respect your body with good diet, hard work in the gym, and rest. Good Luck

I've actually heard that you should gain mass first, but I suppose if you're a beginner it really doesn't matter so much (?).

John Berardi makes an interesting comment about this at www.johnberardi.com . He says that you should get defined first and then gain the mass cuz when u increase the mass, the current % of bodyfat will determine the %percent of weight you gain will be lean body mass and which will be fat. The leaner you are to start with, more of the weight gained will be lean body mass. If you have a high %body fat, a lot of the weight you'll gain will be body fat.

I believe the answer to that question is really determined by your PRESENT condition.

rpacheco hit the nail on the head. It depends on where you are now?? How is your BF%? Is is alot? Can you live with more? Because if you can, then go ahead and gain mass. But, if you are unhappy with your present bf, then you should probably lean some first. Otherwise, you have to realize that by adding mass, you will also be adding more fat, and it doesn't care where it goes. So, assess your situation, and do what you "feel" the need for first. Good luck.

The leaner you are the better the ratio of LBM to fat that you'll achieve when bulking. The fatter you are, the better the fat to LBM loss ratio you'll achieve. Berardi's theory is that you should not bulk above about 14% body fat. To me that sounds very reasonable. Cut down to less than 14-15% and then begin to bulk.
