Well, I'm back here after an enforced period of homelessness and joblessness (living with my parents). I've also just moved to London, ad currently trying to settle down. Joined an amazing gym- start next week- and a running club. I've had a few problems with diet and stuff (I'll write about them on the nutrition forum) but I also have a major prob with my legs.
I am doing quite a bit of running at the moment, plus some work on the rowing machine for cardio. I hope to get back into swimming and cycling again. I usually only do upper body weights as I feel so "bottom heavy"-my legs are short and stumpy, and they just seem to be getting bigger. Firmer, but bigger! I'm also losing fat from my butt and hips (also firmer) but don't really seem to be trimming down- just getting firmer! Also my calves are really big and chunky- now I have slimmer ankles it looks rather silly. I've always shied away from working out my legs, in case they get any bigger!
Does anyone have any tips? Should I be doing weights for my legs and butt? If so, what kind of exercises and what sort of weight/reps? I regularly strecth well before and after cardio, especially running. Or am I just genetically lumbered with these tree-trunks forever?
Yours stumpily, the kitten

Unfortunately Kitten(hope you don't mind me calling you that), there are some genetics involved here. However, strength exercises for your legs will improve your situation. If your legs still seem large, it's most likely because there's still some fat collected there. We all have it. However, women that run a lot and do legs exercises usually end up with very slim/muscular legs, assuming of course, their diet supports minimal fat gain. We all have ares on our bodies that seem to "collect" more fat than others. I think it's inherently a problem with excess fat collecting in the legs for women(gut for men). I may be off here so I welcome someone to set me straight on this. This is what I've noticed and read concerning this dilemma. Again, genetics is involved here to Kitten. Same goes for men trying to gain muscle mass, etc. Good luck and keep up the training, it will pay off. DP

Also Kitten, see "Hate my legs" (posted my cjaygirl) under the "Female Discussions" topic I just noticed that Philia2 just posted some great information on toning legs. She emphasizes leg exercises, i.e., squats, etc., that will be of benefit for you. Philia2 competes in fitness contests and has an outstanding physique. DP
