My wife had a bowflex. I think its a big waste of money. I ran into the same problem when I used to workout on it. If you added up the resistance, it said I was doing 300+ on squats, but it was about the equivalent of doing 185. The machine tries to duplicate gravity pulling on weight, but its very inaccurate.

Sorry jbennett, I have a bowflex and love it. Yes, the resistance weight versus free weights is not quite equal. Bowflex adds a cable resistance system to your workout routine. I used to use the bowflex exclusively and saw results very quickly. However, I mix up my routine now with free weights for a more rounded program. It's a very expensive apparatus however, when I don't have time to go to the gym, I feel I can get a complete workout with it because of the many exercises it provides.

I always wanted to try a BowFlex. I have a TotalGym, which I use in addition to free weights, and I love it. Who cares if the weight doesn't "match" real iron -- if the movement brings up a good pump, I couldn't care less. Check the ego at the door, and do what keeps you motivated. That's my motto.
