Hope I can word this correctly so my question is understandable. I use the treadmill at the gym and it tells me the rate of calories burned per min and how many I burn. The steeper the incline and the faster I go,,,the higheer the rate. It also tells me my heart rate. It's my understanding that the higher the heart rate, the more calories are burnt or the higher your metabolism. Are all these things generalities? Does it apply equally for all age groups? I typically have an incline of 8.5 or 9 and a rate of 4.2 mph. At this rate it tells me I'm burning about 10 calories per min. Some days my heart rate goes to 145 +or -. On other days it stays around 137 to 130. Is it true that the higher the heart rate, the higher the metabolism rate? Would a younger person (I am 58) have a higher or lower heart rate for the very same incline and speed?? can someone please give me details. Can I calculate my own calories burned by using heart rate and time??
thanks in advance.

Hmmmm lol you get all confusing there!!!

Heart rate is very personal and it changes from every single person, depending on your sexe, age, physical situation etc etc

Yes, you'll burn more calories when putting up the resistance/speed BUT you got three ways of coing cardio:
1) slow steady cardio for 45-90 mins (always be able to talk normally, no heavy breathing)
2) very fast but short cardio 15-25 mins (heart beats very fast and you'll not be able to say anything at all but desperately trying to catch your breath!!! ;o) and then one of my favorites,
3) HIIT (please read the article in here)

HIIT means High Intensity Interval Training and in my opinion is the very best way to boost the metabolism.

Now this is only cardio. Another thing that'll boost up your metabolism is putting on some lean muscle mass.

Okey? (o:

Hey Philia, I usually do the #2 type of cardio, does that catabolize the most amount of muscle or does it matter which type of cardio your are doing?

Or, you can do my type of pre-workout cardio... I blast some techno music, grab some light dumbells (no more than 5 lbs each) or my 10 pound barbell, then I just kind of run around my apartment for about 10 minutes. jumping up and down, running back in forth, punching the air. When my arms get tired, I put down the weights and keep going. Maybe some jumping jacks. My only thing is that I must keep the pace of the music. Its fun, and it lets me get a great sweat going before I start lifting weights.

I'm with you on HIIT! It's all I've ever done because I despise cardio. Work hard, get it over with...anything more than 25 minutes and I wanna go home!

Hmmm it's true!! (o;

Thanks folks. I'm gathering that although heart rate is related, there is not a "one-to-one" relationship of it and number of calories burned. Just another "indicator".

And yes,,,just very recently I became familiar with HIIT. I'm not any good at running on the t'mill. Am I doing any good by varying my walking? Again,,,I'm using my heart rate as an indicator. So I do lower target range level for a while,,,,then jump into bringing it up to the 85% level,,,then back to mid level,,,etc. Am I fooling myself that that is HIIT? I do this for an hour. (I may not know much....but I AM dedicated. :-) )
