Was curious about what are the best exercises to improve your groundstrokes and serves. Thanks

Alright...a tennis question!! The following are the typical exercises that I can recommend:

1) Using a swiss ball, lie on your back and lift a weighted plate above your head using a straight arm. Now, move from one side to the next. You can also use a medicine ball: stand up against a wall and bounce the ball from left to right against the wall. This works your torso and abs, and will strengthen them for explosive groundstrokes.

2) Using a dumbbell, put weights on one end. Don't go too heavy (light to moderate weight). Hold the dumbbell as you would a tennis racquet. Now, practice your service motion and groundstrokes...do this for about 1/2 an hour. If you don't have a dumbbell, use a weighted baseball bat. Afterwards, if you decide to play tennis, you'll find your racquet to be as light as a feather!

3) Regular weight training exercises that will help you overall are lots of squats, push and military presses, all forearm exercises and lunges. Developing your shoulders, legs and forearms will help your overall game.

BTW, do you play competitively? Singles or doubles or both? Are you a member of the USTA?

Hope these will help...

Thanks rpacheco for the input.

#1 never tried that exercise but will definately incorporate it.

#2 is a must, but I don't recommend that right before a game or watch out for the floaters ;)

#3 An overall weigth training routine (with cardio) I'd recommend to all beginners.

and for your questions, I do play competitively, singles only because I play a baseline game, I love doubles for recreation and improving my volleys. As for the USTA I am not a member but also not being an American could also be a factor for that ;)

thanks again for the tips

Sorry, I assumed you lived in the U.S. Anyway, I used to play that good 'ol baseline game back in high school. But as I have gotten better (and achieved a higher NTRP level) I've learned to develop a serve and volley game.

Anyway, try out the exercises mentioned above and let me know how it goes...
