So you think your strong huh? Benching that 350? Or whatever......But ..
Experts look beyond the bench press, squat dweadlift and power clean for strength?( what your crazy) these only measure -absolute strength.....the force you can exhert one time. A person who bench presses 450lbs with a hurt shoulder is not strong...why? The essence of strength is knowing how to use the right muscle at the right time. So now define strong?...... This mean you can perform any excercise, or any kind any magnitude no matter the weirdness of it and not be sore. ( say what?) Say you workin the yard all day, bending overm carrying buckets dirt, hauling rocks , hauling trees etc, and man the next day you are sore........Wow , but you bench 350? Helped you out a whole lot didn't it? Muscle systems are composed of 2 systems, big powerful( strong muscles) and lil biddy stabilizing muscles. Injuries occur because your iddy biddy stablizing muscles( you don't train) aren't strong enoguht, and the big muscles try to coninsate for it. Lower back every hurt? mid back? Hmmmmmmm, someone not as strong as they thing huh? This is why ANy one will tell you to train your whole body, not just your upper body..... I don't have great abbs, nor a 400lb bench........but i can carry a dryer by myself, carry 3 50lbs of dog food on my shoulders an dnot be sore the next day. (Parts taken from MIke Clark, pres. of National Academy of Sports Medicine) with some of my smart @$$ comments added in for the fun  -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

.....you can do back hypers, and twisting back hypers........they are good, so are regualr deadlifts too.......
Get a block and do deadlifts off them( makes you recruit more lower back muscles, and exploveness. Front squats are great too, zecular sumo squats are fun too..all great for lower back strength. heavy power shrugs, lean over about 15 degrees( from 90) and shurg, and lean back at the same time......You can handle a lil more weight, and should not be substituted for plain shrugs -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

Yes, you can do those things, but can you do a push up, pull up, chin ups or dips? I find most guys at the gym can lift heavy weigtht, but can't do a simple chin up.

trader, my point is.........that just cause you can do a bunch of weight, that doesn't define you as "strong". I'm talking about not weight room strong but core and stablizing stength....think how much core and stabilizing it takes to carry a engine block , like on world strongest man or the atlas balls. -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

That goes both ways. I just think it is a shame that guys can bench double their weight, but can't lift themselves to do a single chin up. I beleive in equality my self. So not only can I bench more than my body wieght(216). I can also go to the park and do chin ups, dips or any other exercise you throw at me. That is what I think defines strenght.

I hear what you are saying, but the title of the thread is "what defines strength?" So are the examples that you showed classified as true strength? In my opinion, A strong person is a person who has OVERALL strength. Not just in one particular area. Again, the title of the thread is what DEFINES strenght?

well if u build strength in ur legs and lower back and stability then u should b able to run faster so ive come across... i can run faster n harder now then i could a few months ago and i havent done a inch of cardio for months.. lol so weather a strong guy is a slower runner i doubt, but anywho i read someones quote dno who on this forum and it said ( which i believe should have relients to this forum and strength w/e )
"Your only as strong as your weakest muscle" |

I"m not talking about "weight room strong" trade.........you have a good point however i'm talking beyond that......you can dip and chin up all day thats fine..........but heres and example.......
A week or so ago our dryer went out.....so we had to get a new opne, and go pick it up with a "U -haul" i was able to carry the dryer by MYSELF done 10 steps abotu 25 ft to the U- haul set it done, rest a sec, get in the U haul and pick it up, and slid it in.I was not sore the next day, actually i went the same night and did deadlifts and didn't have to lighten up any. This is what i'm talking about, "real strength" the strength you use everyday, hauling groceries, doing yard work, hauling mulch and pouring it around trees. Hell i can't do chin ups, but I can do all that, I use that every day, howmany times a day do I need to perfrom a chin up? Unless your a roofer, and liek to climb you way up ledges to the roof I doubt you do that,. Dips, chins and push ups have nothing to do with this strength......thats weight room strength. How many body builder perform in the world strongest man comp.? Very very few "true" body builders. Your argue ment is well stated, however i'm saying look beyond convential excercises. -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

and how why do u not classify deadlifts.. as a weight room strength? as a electrician we also go through roofs//attics and to get in and out you go up the ladder the you use your arm ont he to sides usually like a dip.. i use that every day.. so why do u NOT classify a dip an everyday thing..? chin ups is like a pull exercise i pull cable around alot whats different from pulling cable in the same motion with chinups in that motion? yes i use deadlifts in every day things at work like wen im to carry the generator around or lift to car or something i would lift it as i was to do a deadlift.. but if u count deadlift as everyday use then i think chin ups or dips or even pushups r in the same line of path as an every day use... even if u aint an electrician like me the dip motion is still used if ur gettin out of a pool from the side.. or pushin sumtin anyway how often to you "bench press" a tree or a dryer or sumtin off u.. lol if your that stupid to manage to get it on you in the first place then hell u deserve to just die anyway... well thats my opinion, i just believe do what works for you that accomidates to your life style and your goals imma very much believe in "Everything in moderation"

good lord!!! no one is getting it except proncess..........Do you get in and out of a pull every day? no! do you grab a barbell at work and deadlift it? no.........you pull, push and tote things around day.......but none of that compares to wieght room strength..........think of back in the day when machines didn't flip garbage cans..........think of all the muscler cordnation and strength it would take to dump trash cans in a truck for 8 hours a day!......Thats true strength!
If your walking up a ladder, thats more legs and balance( abbs/core) kinda like tight rope walking. You pull and tote cables and crap all day yes..............hwo often do you rewach above your head......and pull your entire body weight up to the next level? -------------- .......adversity causes some to break, but others to break records! ......minds are not vessles to be filled, but fires to be enlightened ......Confucious once said ,DO NOT play leap frog with a unicorn |

"hwo often do you rewach above your head......and pull your entire body weight up to the next level?"
well its amazing cuz ur arms just so happen to be shorter in length then ur body height so pulling yourself up your whole body to the next level is actuallly impossible less uve inherited some monkey sorta genetics.. anyway i use to through bricks and wheel burrers w/e full with them bins and wtot not as u happen to state above. anyway all this isnt really seen as anythign to me just you bostin about urself doing something... tell me this, if you do a curl with a brick and the same motion with a dumbell do u actually think that ( having u had the same grip and weight ) your body could tell the difference between the objects? wo im picking up a brick lets get stronger weight its a dumbell today.. hang on lets go curl an apple its all the same motion and would have the same effect each one on your body having they where in all the sme form, grip tensity and weight and wot not... u call goin up a ladder like tight rope walking why is it your aloud to compare things but others aint.. every motion and every muscle is used in one way or another.. a muscle wouldnt exist if it didnt do anything... our bodys r here to adapt and survive nothing else... besides this is all totally going off course once again.. The articlewas saying true strength is more functional strength than "weight room" strength......cause you can be weight room strong but not be functionally strong. And vice versa.
