What exercises are used to build overall strength? Should age be taken into accout?

deadlifts squats, chins, bent rows, heavy shrugs, and bench press are all good strength builders. ANd age only comesinto play if you are older and or younger

Actually there is no real evidence ( i once thought the same) that weightlifting damages growth in youths. Done correctly that is of course if you use to heavy a weight you can hurt them. But if you use light weights and higher reps they will be ok.

well I think that she could workout using very light weights, like those colored ones that most women use...also I am not a doc so I would first let her doc know ( and hopefully they are up on the research out there), see what they say. Nothing heavy or too much the best thing for kids is to just play and run etc.

My professor said that around 15 yrs of age is a great time to start lifting "heavy" weights. Befor that they should concentrate on proper form using fairly light weight. But even once a child reaches 15 they should be supervised by an adult who know what the hell he's doing.

I'm helping with a high school football team and they had some of the most horrid form I've ever seen. Its not that they were trying to suck, they just were never shown the proper way to do a lift. And as a result I see squats that are either 1/4 squats or else with their back all out of wack. And you don't even want to hear about how they were doing the dead lift, ugly. Its better now though
