bb1fit has perfect advice for those (I'm part of that category) who need to lose the softness, get cardiovascualar improvement, but want to be much more lean and tone. His first advice (and pretty much everyone else's): change your diet. Don't expect to get tone if you don't wipe out fats and sugars from your diet and add more protein and nutrients. There's no shortcut, it's the only way. Another tip he gave is focus on your weight training. Even if you don't want to get huge like the hulk. I don't, but even weight training with smaller weights/high reps has gotten me much stronger. Cardio can be used with this, just as a secondary health improvement. We'll actually get more calorie burn from resistance training as opposed to cardio, because we're burning calories all throughout the day, not just when we stop doing cardio. And, we're building lean hard muscle!
This is just what I've gathered from checking out many of the posts (and paying attention to the moderators answers, they do THIS for a living).
Oh, and just a friendly tip. If you're spending much more than an hour in the gym, chances are you're either overtraining or wasting training time. If it applies...
Hope this helps, I'm definitely open to other's input.
