From experience I know that there are certain foods or drinks that seem to haunt one when trying to lose weight or maintain. They seems to scream out at you even louder when you are trying to be rid of them, taunting you with their fattening calories and satisfying tastes! So, I was thinking, since on this forum many of us struggle with many "addictions", meaning those things we stuff in our face before a second thought is given, I thought maybe we could try some weekly goals as a group here.
Starting on Monday, would anyone be interested in a NO SODA POP goal for that week? Maybe another week we could do cookies, another chocolate (helllppp), etc. As a matter of fact, if everyone wanted to post their top five "addictions", we could work on our goals based on those. By working on one addiction for one week and then adding another to it (continuing on with the prior one), we could be addict free before long! Since this forum has been a very supportive group, I thought we could work together combating some of those smaller goals and see where it takes us? Again, by writing down what we are doing or not doing, it is a admission to our struggles and our successes and I thought this may be helpful to those of us that need a bit more than a Monday checkin. Please respond if you are interested before Monday. At the end of the week if you have met your goal we will have a celebration post!! Also, if you have already met that particular goal on your own but would like to substitute a different one than from what we are doing, just post it for that week. Comeon, Donna, CristalBelle, Batman, Dani and anyone else I missed! Anyone of you that are still sneaking away those troublesome foods, how about it? Hope to hear from you! :) -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. I think it is a great idea veda! Here's my top 5 list
#1 PIZZA #2 FAST FOOD #3 SODA #4 Alcohol(I only have drinks on friday nights, but still would be better with one or two instead of 3 or 4) #5 PIZZA! If you couldn't tell, pizza is my main "I don't want to cook, I'm craving bad food" food. That and cheeseybreadsticks. |

Sounds good. My weakness is cereal. The sweet kid cereals. I love them.
As for soda, I am going on 5 yrs without drinking any type of soda. Before then, I would get a 3 liter at lunch and have it gone by 5pm. Once you have gone awhile without drinking any soda, they will taste awful. I took a small sip of a Coke about a month ago and it was terrible. |

How about we try this then, anyone that is interested, we will knock out the pop this week and substitute water, BUT if you don't have a pop "addiction", post what you will be kicking out this week, or if you are a popaholic and feel that knocking it out totally will be cause for failure, post that you are cutting down to ____ pops for the week or that you are replacing with diet for now - and STICK TO IT! :)
I would like to see these challenges be successful for everyone involved and hope that we get a lot of individuals joining in as I think it may be helpful to many of us that don't realize how much we are really overdoing it with our addictions! Please post and begin your challenge by Monday! Good Luck To You All!! I know I'm going to need it! From the posts thus far pop, chocolate and pizza seem to be the demons for most! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. I'm in Veda! I'll try to drink only 1 diet Coke a day. I know it doesn't sound like a huge sacrifice, but I usually drink more than that a day.

I am doing fine with the no soda pop thing, so I am going to say no to Gummi Bears. I love these things. I have night classes and I usually will go to the convenience store right across the street and grab a bag for class. But not anymore. This thread is a really great idea.

Ok, we got smurfetta and crispy01 in! Where are the rest of you? Don't tell me you've backed out!! This is your chance to join together in the fight against the nasties!
I am doing the no soda thing, I usually just have some over the weekend as my treat, but I am going to have to cut that out too, just don't need that added sugar and I think that hinders trying to adjust my tastebuds to less sugar in the long run! Good luck to all, and those that are still wanting to join in it's not too late!! Veda,
I have to agree with you about sugar. I put it in my coffee everyday and I'm trying to cut down but it's hard. I used Splenda this morning and it does NOT taste good. :( |

I bought Splenda and even though the bag says teaspoon Splenda for a teaspoon sugar replacement, it is WAY too sweet! Try using less, but actually I have found that just cutting it out all together just took a couple weeks to adjust to and I like it better than with the Splenda. I eat oatmeal without sugar, whole grain cereals, etc. and I like it much better now.
Check out this website: http://www.sfn.org/content/Publications/BrainBriefings/sugar.html I can't even drink the diet soda's and most of them contain aspertaime and I won't touch the stuff. -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. I'll focus on ice cream this week. Soda really isn't a problem for me. I have one diet soda after lunch. The rest is water (about 1.5 gals a day now...all my work break time is in the bathroom), coffee (in the morning and sometimes before working out) and milk.-------------- I ran outta gas. Squirt is a citrus type of soda. I haven't seen it since I've lived in Texas, but used to drink it when I lived in Michigan.
Crispy, Good job on denying yourself those gummy bears! Well, I originally wanted to cut down on my diet Coke but instead have been cutting down on the sugar in my coffee, so I'm going to switch my goal for this week. ~Less sugar in my coffee~ |

Okay folks, day three!!!!!!! How is everyone doing? I have sustained now without pop and have my water by my side as we speak! I had cut it totally out before I started working, then for some reason would find myself drinking it now and then, so this is very good for me. I watched someone pouring some pop the other day and all I could think of was, "Gosh, what useless calories, it's just syrup and carb water"! Good Job Veda! You have more willpower than I ever had. Well, last night I was craving coffee (around 8:30 pm), but told myself I didn't need it and I should have some kind of tea instead (chamomile or green tea). I had neither and went to bed earlier than usual. (Which is really good for me because I am a night owl.)
On another note, my family had ice cream for the past few days and it didn't even sound good to me. So, hang in there Wanglais1. You can do it! |

I dodged a bullet last night. I went with a couple of teachers that I work with to a high school basketball game. On the way home we stopped at a convenient store. I could not help myself, I had to get some Gummi Bears. They are like heroin I guess, I am going through withdrawals. But guess what! The store did not even have any, so I bought a bottled water instead. So far today I have been feeling great no cravings yet.

Excellent on the ice cream, WAnglais1! How is your role preparation going? I have the same problem at my gym, It would be easier to ignore, as others here have said to do, if they weren't just SITTING on the machines chatting away like there was no one else in the room and look at you like "don't even think about asking me to move" looks, lol!! It is worse when my boys are with, the girls begin with the fluttering eye thing! I have thought about jotting an anonymous note to management asking them to keep an eye out for it, but I guess I just need to get the backbone and deal! :)
Sounds like everyone is doing good thus far, whether it be due to circumstance or will power! Keep it up, remember they say 2 weeks and it will become a habit! ============ Quoting from WAnglais1: Fine. Alrighty! Day FOUR!! How many have made it this far with your goals? Last night was hard for me for a minute, I had drank water until I was blue, used the bathroom enough that the employees at work must think I have some disease, and I wanted a POP - but I didn't! I filled a glass with milk and enjoyed, I don't drink milk much and it was refreshing and though there is much to be said about milk, it was better than pop to me as I love milk and it has some benefits rather than NONE for pop!
-- Great to see you, Donna!! Jump right in with that chocolate addiction!! :) The trick is that we are trying to know out some of these addictions by doing one for a week and then adding another the next, I'm wondering - HEY, should we do the same addiction for two weeks, guys, instead of one? Maybe that would be stricter and more focused before jumping in with another?? Whatcha think? WAnglais1, hey, good luck on the musical next week! How is everyone doing? I agree, CristalBelle, let's stretch the challenge to a full two weeks, I know the point is that we are going to continue NOT eating or drinking the addiction after we have passed our one week goal and then adding another, but I agree and think that each addiction should be concentrated on a full two weeks and hopefully it will become habit to not eat or drink it any longer, then we can add another.
Ok - so let's keep this weeks "addiction" posting for another week - CAN WE DO IT??? Two weeks of NO NO NO SODA POP, or whichever "addiction" you chose - OF COURSE WE CAN, come on, it is ONLY two weeks and look at all the support we have here!! Motivation has to come from within but if you need some support, you got it, just post! I did great yesterday and for someone that has ALWAYS had to drink a coca cola with a sandwich, I am faring very well! It has always been if I ate any kind of sandwich, burger, etc. I had to have my pop. Well, we are on day FIVE and not a sip! How are you all doing? If you messed up, just post it, take responsibility for it and if it helps, share when you did it, why you did it and how you felt, get it off your chest and then start again, please don't give up!! Just think of all the ways that you are strong in your life and remember that giving up one thing should be the easy part compared to child birth, raising kids, having your tooth pulled, the flu, working, RIGHT?! When you break it down sometimes it can seem so miniscule (sp??) compared to the other things we have to deal with day to day or give up! GOOD LUCK!! KEEP TRYING!! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. THAT would be a challenge to me, too, WAnglais1, and it seems to be a biggy with others, so I agree!! I guess we are doing this one, mine pop, yours ice cream, for another week and then we can add the pizza one the week of March 7th unless of course you want to get ahead start!!
Let me ask this, is there ANY pizza recipe that would be okay? I mean you have tomato sauce and can add a lean protein topping, maybe thin the crust out to nearly non-existant and use a whole wheat flour and low fat cheese and less of it?? Just wondering if it is a no-go down the road totally or if eating a piece or two and STOPPING at that *jeez* would be alright? In other words, can there be a healthy pizza, I guess is what I'm asking!! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Hellooooooooo....I hear an echhhhoooooo :)
Well, who made it through the weekend?? It seems to always be the toughest time for me for some reason, how about everyone else? How many made it through their first week without eating their "addiction"? And please, please don't NOT post if you didn't make it, instead post why you chose to eat/drink it, try to understand why you made that decision and don't be afraid to look for support! I made it, as difficult as it was over the weekend, whew, I managed. I find myself coming very close to reaching for it at the store and have to remind myself that I'm not going to do it and instead grab a water, which seems to cure me as soon as it hits my mouth, it is just the decision making that is the tough part - should I..just this once...it won't hurt...I also remind myself that I don't NEED those calories, people call them "empty calories" but they are far from empty full of all that sugar, lol!! Good luck to everyone and I hope to hear from you all, another object of this challenge was to see if we could commit to one thing and post our frustrations and successes, so let's hear it! :) -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Hey Veda,
No chocolate for me so far! 5 days without choc is a big deal for me. I came so close to caving in today though. I have to tell you, not having any money is a very good thing! I've even cut down on the potatoes, haven't had any lasagne for ages and ages, can't afford any diet coke ATM. Im still failing miserably on the red meat though, and now I think Im going to have to add ice-cream to my list. I need to stop the other half buying it, or else I wont stop eating it! Anyone have any self control, I can't afford to by it off you, but I'd love to borrow it for a while! Take care, Donna |

Well, I must confess that I have not done well at all. And today I was very very bad! I waited too long to eat and after work I stopped at Jack In The Box. I know that that wasn't on my list, but come on! What is there at Jack In The Box that is healthy? So, I've failed week one. I'm hanging on though and will continue with the challenge. I'm ...oh, sooooo weak. Veda, you must have some strong willpower! I'm jealous.

I don't know where my post went from Wednesday, but I posted, I time out quick when I'm on FT so maybe that is what happened as I posted then had to get back to work...bummer.
Well in short I just wanted to congratulate all of you for your choices! It is great to know that we can go without something that seems like life or death at times when we want it. I think it might be a good idea if we took and figured the amount of calories we cut back these last two weeks (or whatever your at) and I would venture to guess we've saved ourselves quite a few useless calories! Even if I drank only one pop a day that would mean as of today I have had at least 1200 calories less! Smurfetta, you may not of made some good choices, but you posted instead of hiding away and that is a good choice! Besides, your goal was to cut back to one diet pop a day, wasn't it, even though your Jack In The Box wasn't on the healthy list, how did you do with your goals thus far? Just don't let one mistake turn into ten, that is a pattern with so many of us. Forgive, move on. If I make a bad choice, and I do, I always try to make two good ones and exercise a bit more that day, then I feel like I haven't got to carry the guilt around with me for days! It is about choices, isn't it? I think these challenges will help me and hope they help you as by becoming aware of what we are trying to cut out and working on that one thing for two solid weeks, I hope that our cravings subside more as crispy01 said and then we can add another annoyance food to our triumphs!! Well, Day 12 and I'm still pop free! Next week I will be adding pizza to my list as WAnglais1 is! How about all you? HEY - and GOOD LUCK with the weekend!!!! If you are going to treat yourself, try a new exercise or a new outfit, rather than food, but if you pick a cheat day, that doesn't mean you have to fill yourself full of junk, you can pack on as many calories as you took off in just a meal or two of junk and that is soooo counter-productive! And try to stay away from your challenge foods!! :) -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. It is Wednesday and I guess I will just keep posting...I am pop-free, although I have to admit, I took a sip of my son's when he was here, but it wasn't a bad thing, I just wanted to see if I had some miraculous tastebud change after all this time and I gotta say, I wasn't that impressed! I certainly didn't drink anymore than that and am very happy with myself on that accord.
No pizza this week yet, still searching for that lower fat/carb pizza recipe! That is one thing I won't KEEP out of my life, but by doing these challenges, I know that one day if I want a piece or two I can stop at that! Good luck to everyone else! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. No pizza?!?!?! You're kidding right? Pizza is my FAVORITE food! My MIL is here for a few days so we may splurge on pizza. If we do, I will try to get a veggie pizza.
This week was pms/tom week, so to the chocolate I ran. Why do I crave that SO BAD during this time? (BB1 probably knows the scientific answer for that question, where is he?) I know that if I deny myself chocolate for a few weeks, then the craving is gone except for that time of the month. WAY TO GO Veda! |

Hey, smurfetta, here is an interesting site I found!
http://www.well-net.com/PMS/PMSfactsheet-1.html Good luck with your week without pizza, or you can pick another, that is just mine! And thank you, still popless today, drinking water as we speak! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Thanks for the Great info Veda. Describes me perfectly...unfortunately. :(
I think next week I'm going to TRY to stay away from cheese. I LOVE cheese...and this will have to include pizza (who wants to eat a cheeseless pizz?). O/T: WHY isn't my photo up yet? It's been quite awhile since I uploaded it. |

You can email George, he will take care of it for you! You just go to the home page here at FT and at the very bottom there is a link that says "contact us", click that and his email is in there. He is always very helpful!-------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. Hello everyone! It is the second week of our second challenge! I am so happy to say that pop is no longer a choice of drink and though pizza seems like a necessity, it has been cut out until I can find a decent recipe!
Good luck to everyone on your current challenges! -------------- Veda MISERY IS OPTIONAL ***When you are up to your ears in trouble, try using the part that is not submerged. ***The difference between a dream and a goal is a plan. HAVE A GREAT DAY! |
