Does anyone else do this? A couple of times a week at the end of my cardio sessions (treadmill or walking) I walk backwards for 2-3 minutes. Of course it is at a much slower pace so it is also part of my cool down. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

I think, just like switching up anything else, it surprises your leg muscles and for a few minutes they are saying "what's going on here?"....lol. It does seem to warm up the front of my leg right above my knee. When walking backwards we are putting our toes down first and rolling to the heel, which is the opposite from regular walking. I just do it for something different and like you said, to see where I've been.

Woah. Excellent timing, azredhead. I just saw someone doing this last night and was kind of confused because, let's face it, she looked really weird on the treadmill. And kinda like she was going to fall over at any time - course she was *not* putting toes down first (were you in marching band???). Anyway, thanks much for the explanation!

I've heard of that. Apparently, (and especially if you run big distances A LOT), minute splinters of bone detach themselves from the shin (this is NOT shin splints by the way) This isn't as drastc as it sounds, just painful and a hinderence to running, but walking backwrds like you are doing, azred, sort of makes the splinters go in reverse and reattach themselves to your leg.

This may be totally unrelated.. but the eliptical trainer I use sometimes has a program which switches your direction from time to time. It feels really odd going "backwards" on it.. and after a little while.. the burn kicked in. I think I was only going backwards for a short duration.. but my muscles told the story the next day. Owie.

Just a little trivia about walking backwards!!

Walking Backwards - China's ancient Mountain and Sea scripture records the exploits of an itinerant immortal who could walk backward faster than the eye could see. Walking backwards has been popular ever since. The movement exercises muscles that are not used in ordinary walking, especially in the back, waist, thighs, knees and lower legs. Some people believe walking backwards is akin to a karmic reverse, allowing you to correct mistakes and sins of the past.
A version of the walking backward exercise is the "walking backwards while rolling magnetic balls around your hands movement." The magnetic balls electro-magnetically massage acupuncture points in the palms and give aging wrists good exercise

Never walked backwards, but I go backwards on the eliptical. I usually do 20 min forward 10 minutes backward then finish with a forward motion again. Walking backward up a hill is really good for the quads....feel the burn
