Working out your obliques will not stop you from appearing to have "love handles".
I been having this argument with a buddy of mine for a couple weeks now. The argument is that working your obliques will cause muscle gains in your sides which will still look like love handles. Not the fat, flabby sides you might be thinking of. But muscles that stick out beyond your natural waistline width, giving the appearance of "muscular love handles".
I actually kinda see what he is talking about, as I have seen different pictures of people who seem to work out their obliques hard vs little or not at all. Even though I think the "non-obliques look" looks better, I am not going to stop working them out.

I guess it would depend on hwo big they get and how often you train them. ANy muscle thats trained too much with weight will respond by getting bigger to compinsate for the stimlus. I've always be told, never put a whole lot of weight resistance on the abbs, by adding weight your wantingt he abbs to get bigger. Light ristance is the key, but most excercises should be done with your own body weight.
PErfect example, look at olympic gymnasts( also tumblers) . They have great abbs, just from turning and twisting there own body weight over and over again. I should know being in cheerleading, i see alot of nice abbs, on girls and guys.
