I'm seriously thinking about going out for Track in the spring, specifically for shot and discus.

The thing is, I don't know how to throw a discus. I would only do shot, but my school is weird and you have to do a minimum of two events. Is there any way I can prepare now?

Also, what kind of running should I be doing, along with strength? I'm thinking about seeing if I can stay after school a couple of days a week and lift, maybe use the track.

HELP!!

Laura - the track coach should be able to teach you how to throw discus and set up a running program for you.

With the running, start slowly so you don't get shin splints - walk, jog, run is a good start.

when i did shot put and diskis in jr high, we never ran, maybe light jog to get blood flowing......but we went to our field and practiced, or worked out a lil.

andrew - when i did shotput we had to do a field event as well, whether we were runners or not... I would plod along forever....

Laura - running is a good way to condition you for endurance, but won't improve your shotput.

oh i know that. that's why i am strength-training at home, since i have very little money right now, and no access to weights, except canned stuff:(

i'm mainly targeting arms, chest, and back, then abs. are there any other areas that i need to specifically work on?

legs......your drive and push start with your legs then that momentum is transferred to the upper body for the throw.

Bench and curles are what i did to get ready this year befor track n we had an undefeated county track season with me as the record holder for shot n discus so just work your arms a lot n if u r only doing field eveents dont worry that much for running n to trow the discus u take it n lay it flat in your palm n at the last part of your finger u can bend lay the end of the discus there then, walk threw your stance,i spin so i line up on the back line n what u want to do is spin 1 time around n throw the discus n make it spin about a lil hjigher than sholder leverl and u shuld throw it prityy far
