As some of you know i had been having trouble getting some good sleep, well now that i've been taking some sleeping aids like trazodone i've been getting some sleep. But i've had a lack of energy not only in the gym but just in general. But do have to admit that i've been sleeping more than i did before about 9-10 hours when i used to sleep 7-8. I'm wondering if sleeping too long could be contributing to my lethargy or the sleeping aids. Thanks

Your answer could very well be both. We all "need" different amounts of sleep. For instance, 6 hrs. is optimal for me. Less, and I feel tired and irritible, more and I feel groggy all day. So, if you are used to a certain amount, and you are now getting more, this could lead to lethargy.(one other thing to note about more sleep, the longer the chance of a catabolic state due to no nutrient intake)

And finally, the sleep aids are a no brainer.

Well 8 hours seems to be my sweet spot and i know sleeping aids can make you groggy when you first wake up for about an hour...but all day? I will try tonight with no sleep aids.

A note of caution, as you well should know, the longer you go "using" an aid like this, the more of a "need" it will become. Maybe not physically, but mentally you will begin to believe you just cannot sleep without the meds. Be careful here, use this type stuff very sparingly if at all. Try to get back into your normal routine as quickly as possible.

I think this could also be because it not "natural" sleep. Its induced with drugs, and could be interfering with you sleep cycle. The messing up of one or more stages of night can make you feel like you haven't sleep hardly at all.

Sleeping pills surpress rem( stage 4 of sleep) Which is your deepest sleep, this is the stage you dream in. So by messing this up, your not getting your deepest sleep possible. Could be why you feel groggy.

Gotta agree with bb and andrew on this. Sleeping medication, even a half tablet, make me groggy the next day. All day long. My system just can't handle them. That might be the reason right there.

Trazodone induces a more natural sleep than the usual sleeping pills which do alter your natural sleep pattern, however I agree that it is not a good idea to take them all the time as you become psychologically used to them.

I am glad you did without and feel better today, Justin.

Is it true that as you age that you don't need as much sleep as you used to?

Hey Justin, I'm so not a sleep analist but I have had some experience with Trazodone.

I'm not an expert but what I do know is this:

Trazodone is an anti-depressant which has a very strong sedating side effect. It is not known to have adictive qualities or withdrawl side effects. The anti-depressant effect takes a few weeks to kick in. I don't think they really know the exact mechanism of it, but they believe that it hinders the uptake of serotonin by nerves in the brain. This results in more serotonin to stimulate other nerves. Trazodone also may increase directly the action of serotonin.

Check out this page for some really interesting info on the skin and bones of how serotonin, amongst other things, plays out in the sleep process:

http://neuro-www.mgh.harvard.edu/forum_2/SleepDisordersF/4.29.995.46PM5-HTP-SEROTO.html

Here's my guess, and it is only a guess....if this sleep disturbance has just recently come about, maybe you should take a look at what you are doing differently with your diet and supplementation....everything you eat and whatever you do affects your body, and has an effect on the brain and what goes on in there, that in turn, has more effects on the body.

I hope you find a solution soon, I know the agony of not getting those fabulous REMs!

Thanks Julienne, i'll ask my dad more about that but as of now i am not taking any sleep aids and have been getting to sleep my new problem now is waking to have to pee and not getting back to sleep so now i'm going to limit my water intake later in the night to see if that helps. After about a week the ZMA is starting to help i'm been having some good dreams and sleeping deep if it werent for peeing i think i'd be good. Also taking the ZMA at the right time i have found is essectial..sp?
