I just wanted to take a moment to address the motivation issue as at times it seems to confuse us, we ask it from others, we look for it in a pill or a new fad diet, we search for it everywhere wondering why others have it and we don't, why we can't have it, where can we get it? For starters the definition of MOTIVATION is: the act of motivating; providing incentive the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal; the reason for the action; that which gives purpose and direction to behavior; "we did not understand his motivation"; "he acted with the best of motives" the condition of being motivated; "his motivation was at a high level".

That being said, it is obvious that it is purely psychological and purely meant to come from within (as Hec stated in another post).

How do you NOT get motivation? You cannot buy it. You cannot sell it. You cannot beg, borrow or steal it. You cannot borrow it. You cannot ask it of someone.

Where can you get it then? From within yourself. Yes, you have it, I have it, we are born with this driving force; an infant determined to scream until someone hears him and satisfy's his needs. Sometimes it feels like it has left us entirely, it feels like even a good swift kick in the arse wouldn't bring it back, but it doesn't leave, we just ignore it, make excuses for it's departure, complain that we need it but someone has to help us find it.

So...what do you do to find it? Look ahead, way ahead at what you would like your life to be, NOT what it is now. IGNORE what it is now! For just a moment from that can be a new beginning! Then chase after that image until you find it, put all excuses behind you and shrug off that tired skin of defeat.

DO NOT - let anyone get in your way
DO NOT - let anyone tell you you are selfish for wanting to better yourself
DO NOT - let small annoyances hinder you rather learn from them and continue on
DO NOT - let yourself stop you as you can be your greatest enemy if you allow yourself to get in your way
DO NOT - use excuses for messing up, just admit to it and move on instead of rewarding it with further bad habits

DO - Look forward to LIFE
DO - LAUGH, LOVE & LIVE
DO - Be proud of yourself
DO - Be yourself
DO - Continue to feel the wonderful effects of motivation and you will see the wonderful results!

So, in a nutshell, motivation is something that we have within, yes, we can HELP to motivate someone, but unless motivation is there, our help is like spittin' in the wind.

I have been very good at pretending I don't have such a thing as motivation when it comes to being healthy, like many of us are, but part of getting healthy is being honest with ourselves. So, how about we stop making excuses, stop looking for some magic formula or person to come along and motivate us and just look within, get rid of the undesireable baggage we carry around that not only hides our motivation, but steals from our personalities and who we want to be or who we once were!

I want to be me again - I want to laugh and enjoy life not sulk behind this extra weight and self-pity! Join me in bringing in the new year with an unbreakable, continued promise to ourselves that we will learn to love ourselves again, to laugh again and to listen to that inner being SCREAMING to get out - if we listen, we will hear that motivation saying "GET OFF YOUR REAR AND DO SOMETHING!" so be ready, it's the best medicine out there!

Great post vedaK!

As you said, one of the most important things for motivation is to have an idea of what you WANT to be like. Writing down your goals and being specific helps even more. (I think you just did that in another thread :))
