My friend smokes 5-6 cigarettes a day while taking a lot of protein, like close to 200 g. He knows smoking is bad for him, but doesn't think it is any worse if he takes that much protein per day. I seem to think that taking that much protein might make the cigarettes even more dangerous for him than they already are. Does anyone know of any side effects of smoking that could be increased with that high of a protein intake? Or is smoking just as bad with or without the protein? Sorry if this question seems kind of weird, I'm not very knowledable when it comes to health stuff. :)

I dont think that the two have anything to do with one another. Smoking causes cancer, protein feeds hungry muscles.

I thought it might be a concern because I know smoking dehydrates you & you need a high water intake when supplementing that much protein. Just wondering, thats all.

I was actually talking to a nutritional scientist about it and he said that the amount of water a person intakes should actually be increased if they smoke, because smoking does cause some dehydration. With the amount of protein my friend already supplements, it could be quite detrimental to his liver if he doesn't factor in the extra water his body requires because of his smoking. Not to mention all the other bad side effects of smoking. I didn't know people would consider it such a dumb question!

dont worry ab that, menace is all talk...
protein causing liver problems is blown out of proportion. Do you have any idea how much protein you have to absorb on a regular basis to cause problems. And your body will let you know its too much long before that point.

wrestler called my bluff....:::throws my cards into the muck::::

he's so concerned spending all this energy trying to convince his friend the two things are dangerous....when he could just focus his attention on getting his friend to quit smoking...if his friend doesn't give a $hit about smoking affecting his health, u think he'll drink mroe water out of fear for his health?

Drinking more water every day is a lot easier to do than stop using an addictive substance such as cigarettes. It takes time to stop, and he has slowly progessed into smoking fewer and fewer cigarettes. Hopefully by Christmas I can convince to finally kick the habit!
