Greetings all,

I'm hoping one of the pros can help me out. First a little background.

I'm a 48 year old male, weighing in at 164 Lbs, 6 feet tall and a steady body fat % at 17. My waist is 32 and I've been training for about 1.5 years - 6 days a week. My wife is a nutritionist so my diet is healthy and controlled. All in all I have been doing really well and am quite pleased with things.

I'm interested in taking my training to the next level, i.e. increase the intensity as I would love to gain some muscle mass. I'd really like to be at 180 lbs but this is proving challenging as my body type is that of an ectomorph and so adding mass is not easy.

So far I have managed everything with proper training, rest and diet.

The question on my mind is: If I need to take my training to the next level and gain muscle mass, do I need to have supplements and/or shakes? I've avoided going that route as that requires a lot of work and research (and expense) and if I can manage to achieve my goals without the use of supplements I'd like to go that route. Hard work and commitment is not an issue.

Please share your thoughts and experiences with us.

hey there julian, I'd have to say the only supplements i use and would reccomend is a good whey protein isolate for post workout along with some dextrose and maltodextrin for an insuline spike along with simple and complex carbs needed post workout. I would also put some glutamine in my shake about 5-8g. but you really can't take too much glutamine. As for the other supplement that make outrageous claims of 15lbs. of muscle in 4 weeks i would stay away from. Creatine also wouldn't be a bad route i know many people here have had great success with it. If your looking for mass a good clean diet with lots of calories will get you there. You can do a search at the bottom of the page for gaining muscle mass or gaining weight, you will find tons of information there. Also signing up for the 12 week mass gaining program on here would be a good start lots of people have seen some nice gains from this program. One more thing you could do to learn more about dextrose and malto would be to do a search at the bottom on "insuline spiking" Lots of info on that as well, good lick:dumbbell: and train hard:big_smile:
