I work out costantly and feel bad for people when they walk near me and they smell bad. Although I don't think that I do, is there any way to tell if I smell bad when I'm at the gym or is it something that you can't really tell. I shower twice a day and put on deoderant right before I work out, is it possible? And if so, how can you combat BO when you're working out?

I know the leaner I get and the stricter my diet, the more I smell like a gorilla. Not sure why, but I think it ha something to do with sweating out really old toxins that are stored in fat tissue. (Blech).
Anyhow - sopunds like you are doing all you can to combat it! -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

thanks for the replies. Asimmer, if what you say is true about getting leaner, which I am and sweating out old toxins then I hope I'm not getting anyone extremely high. College was rough!

Conventional wisdom suggests that perspiration is the cause of body odor. Wanna hear something interesting?Perspiration by itself is basically odorless. The problem of it comes from bacteria and odors coming from other sources. These are the real culprits.
Anaerobic bacteria, which flourish when your body doesn't have enough oxygen, may well be the biggest cause of body odor. As the body's metabolism goes to work, it gives off odors which is the body's way of ridding itself of waste products. Any imbalances in metabolism will result in stronger odors. It is also interesting that dietary imbalances, resulting in constipation or a deficiency of magnesium or zinc may be other causes of body odor. Because of different body chemistries, some people who eat large quantities of meat or who are vegetarians have a very distinctive body odor which can be quite offensive. Some individuals cannot metabolize foods containing large amounts of choline, such as eggs, fish, liver and legumes. The result is a "fishy" smell. The only way to find out is to cut it out and see if there is a difference. As far as your pits (and other stinky areas) the apocrine glands (sweat glands)under the arms and in the groin secrete a substance that is the major non-food/drink related cause of body odor. This substance, which contains protein, carbohydrates and lipids, is often secreted by a surge in sex hormones caused by tense moments or emotional stress. It is then quickly attacked by bacteria, causing odor. As far as making it better? Well, the metabolic part might be something you have to live with for the sake of your health and goals....as for the pits, groin and feet you can try a little Emu Oil after your bath to help kill off the bacteria. Thank you for attending BO-101. |

My theory is if you dont stink at the gym you are not working hard enough. Common this is wear we sacrafice
ourselves in the name of health and strength not impress others with our cologne. -------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. The world is mine now and forever. No one holds command over me. No man. No god. I am ANIMAL! and that is enough. |

there's this guy that goes to my gym, comes in with his hair all gelled up, and his beard tight. He does the token 135 on the bench, skull crushers cuz someone probably told him that it's cool to do these (which it is, but you know what I mean) all the while wearing a ton of cologne. He doesn't stink, but he is in all ways a panzy. I guess you have to decide where you wanna be. -------------- Spark the fire that will torch the numbness inside. d-fly, thanks a lot for the tips and lesson, that was quite the breakdown. Lots of good info. Well, the only thing I can say is that I eat about 8-10 egg whites a day and supplement a ton w/ protein shakes, so from what I gather this can be a source of stank? If I do smell (which I'm not really sure) it's not from the typical suspects (pits, etc..) it would be from my body as a whole, so I suppose from a food or lack thereof. Are there test that can be done by a doctor or somewhere to find out if your body doesn't processes these things efficiently enough? Is there some sort of test you can use on your shirt for after you work out, to determine if there's bacteria there? Also, I've decided to rinse off before I get dressed in the gym, however, if the source of a problem is caused by food that's eaten, this might not prevent any odor, correct?
As for working out hard, I guess the answer is, that b/c I'm at the gym for 1 1/2 hours at a clip and superset most of my workout, I end up sweating through most of my clothes, therefore causing me to wonder. So you know where I stand on that issue. |

Yes I think cologne-man is closely related to make-up girl who makes sure she never works out too hard, so her mascara doesn't run

Hi everybody... I remember reading a post from JDelts saying that when he was on a strict diet, he used to sweat a lot and the smell was different and stronger... I guess it had something to do with his protein intake, you might want to do a search on Fitbuddy...
Hope this helps. -r. |

Wel, you know, if you work out too hard three things happen:
a) your mascara runs and gets in your eyes, and that stings, owie! b) your hair gets all damp and your mall bangs fall down and you totally have a bad hair day c) you win the mutt competition because the boys are all busy sniffing their pitts (and everyone else's) while you are looking like Tammy Fay Baker and kicking a** in the weight room. I stink and I am going to win, you fresh little daisy boys! -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

I smell wonderful. I lift heavy, sweat a lot, but somehow I end up smelling like a freshly picked daisy. Hmmm... must be genetics. Does anyone know how to get your bangs from going flat?? I HATE when that happens. -------------- A broken clock is right twice a day |

burrocfh, I think that this is a possibility since the protein intake is at an all-time high. I'll have to check that out, what is this Fitbuddy you say to search? Thanks
As far as the rest of you, the only concern with smelling is the same as the concern most normal people have as wanting your clothes' colors to match, clipping fingernails, shaving, vacuuming your carpets, polishing dress shoes, blowing your nose, etc, etc. It's about the fact that when you're in public you want to be presentable and not completely embarrasse yourself. I know that I work out and diet in the top 15% of people out there and put my work ethic up against anyone on this site, both in the gym and professionally. My concern about this issue is the same as that of not wanting broken down cars in my lawn or trash laying in my driveway (let alone sleeping next to me at night), so we'll leave it at that. |

cwsupplychain - I answered seriously, and then I answered jokingly. is that a problem?
I don't know what smelling badly at the gym has to do with who or what is sleeping next to you. I do know that some people cannot control what they smell like. Does that mean they are 'trash' and shouldn't work out in public? Does it mean they don't blow their nose, vacuum their carpet, clip their nails, park cars in their yard??? Oh well. Whatever anyone did to offend you, I am sorry. But I do workout to work out, not to look pretty or smell good. After my workout I may shower, put on some makeup and perfume, a pretty dress and look like a bombshell, but while I am working out (key word 'working') I look more like attila the hun. -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. I\'m not lazy, I\'m energetically challenged. |

I figured that since we're bustin balls we might as well start bustin. Seriously though, I could care less about what was being said, just trying to make a point that if I can avoid smelling at the gym, I'd like to. Much in the same way that I do other things in the name of hygiene, that's all. No offense to anyone.
