Kwright, I get them - they are very frustrating! You can see my post in the injuries forum. They tend to come and go for me. If you check that thread you can see tips I got; also make sure you're using appropriate shoes for running, they fit your feet well (not too loose in the heel), and you're replacing them often (as soon as they start feeling hard when you poke inside the sole, instead of springy). I replace my shoes about every three months minimum. Also make sure you warm up well and stretch often. It helps me to make sure my stride is short enough that I have good control over my foot coming down (not sure if that makes sense) smoothly. It may also help to run on the pavement instead of a sidewalk, and it may *hurt* to run on a treadmill!
Forgot to add, seems obvious but when you start running, take it very, VERY slow, take rest days, and ease your running schedule up very slowly. There are good running websites that can give you an idea of the pace to set when you're just starting out, or starting back after a break. Good luck to you; I do feel your pain!
