hey, i want to improve my speed becuase i play alot of sport which needs bursts of speed, and i just generally want to be able to run alot faster for races and stuff. Can anyone give me any help on how to improve speed? Any exercises or activities or anything?
I hear to run faster you have to develop the fast twitch muscle fibres. Does this mean i can do leg weights exercises with light weights, as light weight lifting strengthens the fast twitch muscle fibers?
Or what other stuff can i do to improve speed?
thanks

Hi-
Fast twitch fibers are for immediate speed and slow twitch fibers are for endurance. If you build your leg muscles with weights it will help your running all around. Also to increase speed you can run as fast as you can for a short while, and then go to a normal jog and keep repeating.

U can pull a weight sled or run with a parachute, both while doing sprints.

For racing 5K+ distances, you will want to concentrate on lengthening your stride to increase your speed. You can do this several ways. Hill running, weight training, or flat ground running while purposely trying to throw your legs out further. sivy sivy already answered the sprint trial workouts for less than 1 mile racing.
good luck.
