I began practising rugby myself at the beginning of this year. What i've learned is that the shoulders are the most important part of rugby as it involves tackles all the time. Do some shoulder exercises, and squats and deadlifts as pritchard said.

Alt. DB Curl or Hammer Curl - Biceps
Seated Overhead Triceps Extention - Triceps

I've found that plyometrics has been great for my agility and speed so far, and for strength as said above work on those exercises (squats deadlifts etc.)my advice is 2 not overtrain your upperbody rugby is literally 75% lower body.

Hey, first awsome sport eh. Have been away from it for years but my advise for you is to be strong in gen. Do squats, dead lifts especially. I belive the forwards in rugby need more shoulder strengh then backs. I was a scrum half so I trained with both the backs and forwards. I think because of the nature of the sport strong legs are also a must. Ultimatly this sport utilizes total body strength. In my honest opinion.
Happy training, and enjoy! I am actually thinking about joining the city team this year now that my life has time for it. I miss playing it so much....... CHEERS!
