I was wondering how important resistance training was if you are trying to lose weight. Would it be better to train with weights or resistance training equipment? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Resistance training( weight training) is good do to the fact you build muscle. Yes that muscle does make you "heavier" however this is good weight. Let me explain.
5 lbs of fat looks like about the size of a jumbo roll of toilet paper( size wise) not very dense and just takes up space. Now on the other hand 5 lbs of muscle look slike a bar of soap. Very dense and solid. 5lbs of muscle wil burn calories and raise your metabloic rate. 5 lbs of muscle wil burn about and extra 150- 250 calories a week easly( depending on your metabolic rate) Where-as fat just sits there and makes you look fat. Restastance training makes bones stronger, lowers the risk of many cancers, raises metablism( you can eat more), makes immune system better, any many kinds of mental and psycological benifits as well. Posture gets better, you hold your self up better more self confidance, which can lead to better jobs.

If your refering to training equipment as machines, and weights as free weights, you need to do both both have advantages and disadvantages, machines are good for starting out and getting use to motions of the weight. Unless your doing to much weight on a machine you can't really get hurt, cause the machine is fixed and you won't be pinned under anything and are designed for nay age group. However some don't give full range of motion.
Free weights however are good, you can get full range of motion, more portable however if you let your ego get ahead of you, you can get sersiouly hurt so be careful.
Finally last but not least you also need to look at your diet, cause theres nto enough working out in the world to make you look good and loose weight if al you eat are big macs and ice cream. Eat good, do cardio, work out and I promise you, you'll reep beifits.
