Resistance sit ups at home?

Hey guys, have used the search button but can't find any suggestions so thought I'd be alright starting a new topic. From reading these boards the general consensus for getting well defined abs muscles is resistance excercise, at the moment I'm doing a hundred sit ups a day, 20 chin ups and press ups and I'm also cycling several miles a day and putting in some high intensity work on a turbo trainer about 20 - 30 minutes a day, however my main goal is to broaden my chest and get some more muscle definition in my chest and shoulders but I'm not seeing much improvement.
So what I wanted to ask was is it true that for building muscle mass 20 sit ups with resistance are better than 100 without? if so, does anybody have any ideas on what I could use to create the resistance at home? I don't have any weights and have tried using bottles of water/sand but they dont make any difference, not heavy enough.
Sorry to ramble guys, any input would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

Spend $30 and get a heavy dumbbell or a plate. There is no way around it, unless you are going to find heavy car parts etc your going to have to buy a weight. Other options (still require weights) is to hang from a bar and lift your legs in front of you, or pull them up underneath you. You will need weights for this too but smaller amounts than if you were on the floor doing traditional situps. :dumbbell: You can buy a cable machine so you can do overhead cable crunches or cable crunches, or a bench so you can do incline crunches (not that expensive). Good luck!

Ok looks like I'll have to invest a bit of money on weights then. do i just hold a dumbell against my chest while doing sit ups?

Yup, some can hold it behind their head too. I have not done that, I hold two 70lbs on my chest for incline situps and could go heavier but don't have them either, if your doing over 100 without you will prob need a pretty heavy dumbbell to get started but doing with any weight is better than without. Let us know how it goes.

Will do, I can do a lot more than a hundred in one go if i try, i've managed three hundred before, but after a hundred i just get bored and I don't want to over do it and hurt something. Have you got any guidlines on how many sit ups with weights i should start off with? Keep doing the same amount but with a light weight for example?
Also I've heard that doing press ups with your legs elevated (on my computer chair for example) can be beneficial to your pecs and upper body and shoulders. I've got a broken ankle at the moment so resting my shins on a chair is preferable to my feet on the ground. Will this work as well?
Thanks a lot for your time buddy :)
