Okay, here's my problem. I have enough trouble sleeping as is and now I am starting shift work at my job. My sleep schedule is going to be screwed up and I know I will not be able to adjust to this right away so I need sleep aides to help.
I don't want to take them, but I am not kidding myself. If I don't do this I will never get the rest I need for the gym.

You can also consult a doctor about using sleeping pills.. or you can use the old idea of warm milk lol

Valerian root is an inexpensive herb that has been around for thousands of years, and works. No grogginess, etc.
Melatonin can be useful, but be careful about taking it daily. It can with chronic use shut down your own bodies natural production.

I'm a world class insomniac. Sorry menace , ambien is habit forming. Also what puts one person to sleep can have the opposite effect on another. My wife takes a benadryl for a bug bite and she is out cold in 30 minutes. If I take anything with that stuff in it I am wired for 24 hours with no chance of sleep. Many over the counter sleep aids have that effect on me.
I got these tips at a sleep clinic.
1-- do nothing in bed but sleep and have sex. Do not read or watch TV.
2-- Don't get in bed until you're ready to sleep.
3-- This one is the biggie...Get up at the same hour and minute EVERY day. Never vary this. If you normally get up at 6 AM and the night before you fall asleep at 5:30 AM get up anyway. This will help train your body to sleep.
Valerian root and melatonin did nada for me but may help you. Drugs may help short term but remember with any drug there is always an equal and opposite effect...like a hangover from alcohol. With sleep aids, you sleep a few nights but pay for it when you stop using them.
You have my sympathy. I have come really close to using Mike M's method. It makes me crazy for people to tell me "you'll sleep when you get tired enough. Bullshit. I have gone 6 months on 3 hours a night and it's awful. Another one is "lack of sleep never killed anyone". Possibly true but I am convinced it will SHORTEN your life and it definitly makes day to day living difficult.
I am up to about 5 hours of sleep a night by using the stuff I mentioned above. Good luck. I know it's no fun.

Thanks for the advise guys. I went to a herbal store and was talked out of Melatonin and into something called Sleep+ which is a valerine root, hops, skullcap mix. I also have something called Hulands Calms Forte on order which apparently is good for falling alseep fast.
I don't want to become dependent on this stuff, I just want to take it to help me get to sleep during shift changes (going from Graveyards to Mornings the next weekend... Brutal).
@Charlie: Thankfully my insominia is rare (maybe a couple times a month or so), but with the shift work I know its going to get worse. I completely agree with the "Sleep will come" as BS, because some nights it doesn't.

heh charlie....I guess the ads for ambien are misleading then...they all claim it's non-habit forming...
light walk before sleep may help you get to sleep easier.
....got any ultra boring books? CSPAN on tv?..tune in for 20-30 minutes you'll be out like a log.....
i used to be an insomniac also....3-4 hours in bed with no avail...since I started to exercise it went away...
also try ZMA....zinc, magnesium, aspartate supplement....many people reported deeper, better sleep...worked for me well...
