What are the advantages/disadvantages towards using a behind-the-back pulldown, and a front pulldown? I know that the behind-the-back one has be criticized for causing injuries -- how common is this? Is it more effective than the front version?

I think as long as you adjust the weights, its ok. Front pull downs makes you lean back alot, and changes the emphaise or area of the lats it works. Behind the back ones put your body in a posistion of a regualar pull up. I think behind the neck ones would empasize a more toal area and stretch of the lats. Than say the front.BUt as long as your "pulling" form the lats it should not matter.

Behind the neck is one of my favorite back moves and can really give you a different burn. Watch some folks do it though and you'll often see the elbows way out in back which is asking for shoulder problems and also why it's often recommended you don't do them.

yea, forgot to mention keep your elbows next, to your sides, imagine pulling form the side of your rib cage or armpit. Don't let them drift behind your back.
