I am trying to get so that I can do chinups, but when I just hang from the bar I hurt. I get pains around my outer armpit and down the sides. What can I do to get rid of these pains, and what exercises can I do to make myself able to do chin ups?

holz - if you can't do any at all, it's easier to strengthen the muscles doing negatives. Put a chair or something by your bar so you're starting in the contracted position. Hold as long as you can at the top and make the negative last as long as you can. It won't take long till it gets easier.

Good point..

you are sore because you haven't developed the 'lat' muscle yet.. build these muscles up and the pain should go away. If you have access to machines start with wide and close-grip pulldowns to the front.

Good Luck
