hey ive been doing weight for a bit now and ive decided to add squats to me routine. I work out at home and i dont have a squat rack or anything like that so i just use the barbell from my bench press. I really wanna do squats because i no how good they are but wen i lift the bar onto my shoulders and go to bend down my left shoulder really pulls and feels badly uncomfortable so i stop and this isnt even with a heavy weight. Ive never had any shoulder problems before or anything and its just with squatting :( and was wondering if this was because i had a weak shoulder or upper back or sumtin and if not are there any other different holds i can do for squatting remembering i dont have a rack or anything. Also is it ok to do deadlifts and squats on the same day??? thanks:big_smile:
soz to go on a bit ...so just any other holds thanks:big_smile:

Maybe your not warmed-up and this will stress yout delts.

I can't imagine e being able to lift for squat off a bench, I'm 6 foot.

I would look for a used rack or cage if you can find one if you can't aford a new 1.

No on Deads and Squats, you should never IMO hit legs and a major upper body part in the same day, for me just legs only need time to recover.

hey thanks heaps for the quick reply. I dont squat off the bench i lower the weight take it off then pretty much clean and jerk sorta thing onto my back(sorry dont know all the terms:laugh:) but for squats do you have to hold it behind ur neck or is there anyway you can hold the weight below your chest???
thanks:big_smile:

You can hold it above your chest being a front squat or behind your hams below your butt being a hack squat.

it probably has more to do with the way you're getting it onto your back by lifting it over your head and trying to set it across your shoulders on it's way back down. you want to squeeze your shoulderblades together and set the bar across the muscle shelf that creates. your hands may also be too close or far apart

thanks heaps for both your responses. I have stuffed around with the behind hams below butt squat but i find it hard to keep back straight that way but ill keep working on it. Whats the comparison strength wise with lunges. Are they just no where near as good as squats. Are squats definately worth the effort oh and also im not looking for big bulk in my thighs if that helps the comparison.
once again thanks heaps for both ur quick replys its really really helpful

Do front Squats for thighs, Back Squats for hams and gluts.

Both work all but 1 dominates more then the other.

As for lunges, I do them after squats and a short lung dominates the thighs and longer lunges hits more so on the hams and glutes.

Both are great but your going to hit heavier on a squat for 1 lunges take even more balance then squats.

I'm a Pro Bowler and I use these 2 exersizes for just that, too keep a strong balanced core and stability has to be a key factor for me and these 2 exersizes are great at generating that.

thanks heaps and u mention strong core and thats exactly what im lacking at the moment. Incase i didnt mention im 15 and 6,1.5 so im bit on lanky side but with weights that has improoved heaps. I play football( Australian rules ) and a strong core is imperitive(sp?) wen bending to pick up the ball while being bumped ect. For lunges you say short lunge for thigh how short is short:laugh: just rough estimate. But i guess the balance and stability would be more when you go all the way down, is that right???
I no i sound like broken record but thanks again lol for the help and quick replys
p.s whats Paradigm Status mean?

Short is a normal step and don't let your knee touch the ground!
