I have been working out and doing treadmill since april to lose weight, increase metabolism and tone up. I spend about 2 hrs at the gym about 5 days a week. It's working. But my question is to get optimal fat burning should I strive to be at the upper range of my target heart rate?? I wear a Polar and monitor. I am a 58year old female so my range is 105 to 137. I frequently push myself to 147 or up to 151bpm and stay there. Recently was told I could be burning muscle at that rate and that I should bring it down. The whole purpose of my treadmill is to burn that fat. Will I burn more at a rate of 137 as opposed to a rate say of 110?? Please help. This is so important to me. My goal is to get to 128lbs. I'm down to 137 now (but came from 170...so all is not lost.) Please tell me how to get that last ten off in fat weight rather than muscle weight. I'm trying to buil my muscles to get some metabolism back.
All input is helpfull.

Have you tried adding sprints? Sprinting is considered an aerobic and anaerobic activity. If you compare a pro sprinter to a pro marathon runner you will see that sprinters have A LOT of muscle and marathon runners seem to have no muscle and some are even very malnutritioned looking.

I have no idea when it comes to heart rates or stuff like that, but maybe you could try HIIT. You can do a search for articles and postings about it, there is also an article at abcbodybuilding.com. Whenever Philia gets back from camping I'm willing to bet she could actually answer your specific question, or maybe you could e-mail her.

Thank you both. Anxious to hear from Philia as well. Keep in mind my primary question is where in the target range should I be for FAT BURN. It's my understanding that is different from Aerobic. I'm not interested in Aerobic,,,just want to burn the fat. Yes, secondary, my interest is to build muscle. That is why I tack on an added hour of weights and stuff.. I think Summer's comment is very interesting about sprinting vs marathon. I'd like to persue that one further. I am also going to check the abcbodybuilding out.

Thank you, both lumina20 and summer. Please,,others,,add your two cents. I know there's answers out there.
