In a couple of months I'm going to try rugby for the first time. It's something I've wanted to try for a long time, but always chickened out of.
Now, I'm going to give it a shot when the new season starts in a couple of months. Can anyone give me a good routine to follow in order to get in shape for rugby?
Thanks,

Yeah What position are you looking to play, if you don't know what kind of build are you.
I live in South Africa rugby is by far our dominant sport I play myself, played provincially 2 years, so I'll try and help you just answer rko's question first

you are going to want to become stronger and more flexible all over your body. you want to make sure you are preventing injury as well as performing as best as possible. your legs are going to need to be well conditioned and strong for sure. make sure you don't over look doing neck exercises. there are many situations in rugby where a lot of force will be exerted on your head, neck and shoulders.

well i play for my school its a pretty tuff game. I hadn't played for a couple of years and had gotten out of shape. But at the start of this season i got on the team mainly because i'm the tallest out of everyone and also i have big shoulders. So from my build i go straight into the scrum.
I'm a second row so i get to stick my head between two other guys asses. But with the training the biggest things as the other guys have said your neck, shoulders and legs are the most important. i'd say once your neck is strong you should just be focusing on your legs, not really for speed but for alot of strength. cause you'll lock in with other people for a scrum and you just use your legs to push the other people off the ball. But thats for forwards.
If your more athletic you'll probably be a back so you have to be able to make really big boosts of speed and have good endurance

Ok you play in the lock position and you will probably be the main jumper as you are the talles so don't just build strenght try to get some flexibility in youre legs and some jumping power. You also need to work on shoulders as this is very important wioth you neck,
So Traps, Neck, Shoulders , Legs and CALVES would be the most important, but to become a good ugby player overall body strength is needed!!
Where do you live?
