I posted in the Newbie forum, and guess I went into too much detail and asked too many questiosn, was told I would get more response in another forum...so here is what I posted there....and input would be appreciated.

I actually found the page yesterday, and spent a long time looking around at the boards, etc. A few times I wondered if I was in the right place, since so many of you seem to be intense about weightlifting, etc.

I am 36, about to be 37. I was told last year I have high cholesterol, and since my father died at 40 y.o. froma heart attack, I figured I better start taking care of myself. I do take meds for the cholesterol, but exercise and diet can't hurt!

I have two sons, 16 and 17 (will be 18 this spring), and I have been married for almost 19 years. Yep, I married young!

I am overweight and really want to lose about 35 pounds before February...then keep it off. I think that is a reasonable goal. I am 5'5" and right now weigh between 155 and 160.

I have really screwed up my metabolism over the years. I tend to forget to eat, or ignore my tummy growling because I am busy. I know this has forced my body to store the fat, but I need to find a good way to get the appetite to eat more without just stuffing my face with high sugar or high fat foods.

None of this is going to be very easy. Besides the normal difficulties of getting yourself motivated (and staying that way) I have 4 guys that are meat and potato kind of people....extra gravy please and lots of bread and biscuits. Yikes!!! Don't even try to put something low fat on the table! I have tried to pass things off, but they can taste the difference and won't eat it. They are lucky enough to be very thin.....I am the one with a weight problem!

Any suggestions?? I really don't have the time to make two meals for dinner, and since I am self employed I don't have time to spend during the day fixing meals for myself, I have to run my business.

OK, this is longer than I expected, so I am going to go sit in the corner and be quiet!

There's a post in the nutritional board entitled "Grocer list for the bodybuilder. Take a look at it an you'll notice no processed food. Thats alot of the key to solving cholesterol antd overweight problems. If it comes ready to eat in a box or bag you probably shouldn't eat it.

I followed the nutritional guidelines here for 8 months and dropped my cholesterol from 226 to 183. I've also added some supplements in the form of protein shakes and vitamins. that in combination with the workout plans have taken my blood pressure from an average of 150/95 to 118/70 in the same time period. Along the way, my Dr reduced my BP meds and decided I didn't need cholesterol meds.

It takes a little study, some work but above all perseverance. Just don't quit. I'm not as hardcore as many here but I have seen excellent results. I brown bag my meals out of the house. Good luck and welcome to FT

Also do not get to worked up about " Low fat foods" in most cases they are just as bad for you as the so called fatty foods. Like charlie said look at the list of foods and stick to it ans you will be fine. If I might ask why did you think you might no be in the right place since we are intense about weight lifting?

The processed foods aren't really too big of a problem around here....most things are made from scratch, but I use a lot of cream, milk, butter and such in my cooking.

I have a lot of research to do to try to figure out what I can get past my guys.

Thanks for the input!

I will keep that in mind....and I know it will be a relief to my husband!

As for the thinking I might not be in the right place, etc.....it wasn't meant in any kind of bad way. Just from the posts I have read so many people are talking about all these things that are weight lifting related...it is like a foreign language to me. I can pick out a word or two here and there!

I also cannot imagine having muscles like many of the pictures I have seen of the females here. There is nothing wrong with it, but it isn't me, and I don't want that. I just want to lose some of the extra bulges I have and I don't want to go on Atkins, or Weight Watchers or any of that stuff. They would never fit into our lives around here. :)

I am enjoying reading the posts though, if nothing else I am learning a lot and getting some laughs on some of the boards as well. :)

arhett, you probably should lose the butter and cream.

Mutt, only processed foods are labeled "low fat" as far as I know.

Charlie,

Yeah, it would be a good idea! Actually when it is really bad for the meal I will quite often eat a bowl of oatmeal or something. Hubby doesn't really like it, but he tries to understand.

Take a half cup of dry oatmeal, some store bought eggwhites, a little Hersheys cocoa , some skim milk, ice and puree the hell out of it in a blender.Add a little splenda. Tell him its a chocolate shake. Thats how my wife tricked me into eating nasty old oatmeal. MMMMMMM and it will lower cholesterol to boot.

Charlie,

Oh my!! That is too funny! Actually he doesn't have a problem with oatmeal, he has a problem with me eating it for dinner when there is a full meal on the table. But I will have to keep that in mind!
