This question is mainly for hecdarec because he seems to know how it really is with this stuff. But besides running, pushups, running, situps, and running (I don't have access to a pullup bar), what weight exercises should I be doing to get an overall full-body workout that builds mainly endurance.

I was in Marine Corps boot camp a while back but was injured halfway in and never made it though. It'e been 2 years and now I'm joining the Army and want to make things MUCH easier this time by being as ready as I can. Any suggestions?

if you got access to a gym...do powercleans + push&press as 1 exercise

pick a weight maybe 20-30% of 1 rep max.....and do 20 sets......

1 set 20 reps
2 set 19 reps
.
.
.
.
19 set 2 rep
20 set 1 rep

you can do even just cleans.....endurance?.....you'll be puking on the floor by the end....rest 30-45 sec between sets.....

it's not a military workout...but it will get you in shape....good luck with your aspirations...

Wow thats a neat site. Is that all I would need to do or would you recommend anything else?
2005/04/01, 06:35 PM
yes...

you can also pick any exercise you like....and do sets of 5 or 10 reps....for lets say 5-10 set....rest as little as possible while allowing you to finish those reps.....when for example you can do 10 push ups of 10 sets...with 60 sec rest.....decrease rest to 55 seconds...then 50...and so on..until you can do those 100 push ups for example...you can do same thing for pull ups....running...etc...

but powercleans+push and press are plenty......

err until you can do those push ups/exercise with no rest

Hey grunt,

Take it from somebody who remembers full well what Marine Corps boot camp was like-RUN. It's pretty much the only way to get better at running. The Army only does a 2 mile for their test vs the Marine's 3 miles. But it's still a distance, and you have less time. After that, sit ups will be the next tougher one, followed by push-ups for the last event. All of the events are 2 minutes just like in the Marines, minus the pull-ups.
HIIT cardio and interval runs (sprints, etc) and basic leg workouts (Squats, hamstring extensions, etc) will dynamically strengthen your legs as well as help your time. Time yourself on a two mile course, then use that to help establish a routine and set a goal.
For sit-ups, do crunches (ab routines on this site do wonders for full-fledged situps) and also leg raises and flutter kicks for the lower ab muscles. Training your back well (good mornings, straight leg squats, back raises) helps both sit-ups and improves run times too believe it or not.
And, push-ups- do one-minute burn-outs (continuous movement), even if you have to go to your knees to keep movment. Add tri-cep and chest workouts, like regular and close grip bench, and you're on your way to an easy 2 months (vs 3 months)
I hope this helps man. Good luck, you're going to see a noticeable difference in the 2, but still some challenges. Keep that hardcore spirit and don't let anyone take it away.

Thanx everyone for all of the advice so far.

Quick question. Would putting on a weighted pack and humping (no, not that kind) for a few miles help condition my body at all? After all, I'll be doing a lot of that anyways.

yes....it will help with conditioning

The Army is ridiculously retarded about humping. (Marine talk for freakin-walkin a whole lotta miles) In the Marines, we just get up and go and walk fast all day until they tell us to stop. For some reason, the Army makes you have timed "Road Marches" (yes-timed-and on hardball roads-say bye to your knees and back). I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw it. And they don't teach them in boot camp (basic training for the Army sorry) NOT to run to catch up, just stretch their legs out. They just screw their buddies behind them, and make everybody in the back with the short legs suffer.
So, yes. Get your ruck or back pack and boots on, and get out there. The last one I did with an Army unit was 18 miles in under 3 hours. I don't know why they still do this. I'm in Iraq right now, and the furthest I've ever had to walk was 1,000 meters, and it was to the chow hall.

My knees are shot from the rucking and Airborne ops i did when I was in the Army. The best way to get in shape for the Army is running build up your legs. Do pushups whenever you get a chance. Hope you never have to go to Bragg because all they do is run, ruck and jump. But it is fun! Airborne!

are you part of a military program at school?I forget the abbreviation for it...but I remember our school had it...and it's good because it can help you get into a college for free so that afterwards u can serve for some number of years....

run....aim for 20 miles a week....

do full body compound exercises....pull ups, dips, rows, deadlifts, squats, etc...search for programs and look through powerlifting program...

Menace I think you are thinking of JROTC. I was enlisted when I was in. Running is the best thing. You dont want to get big before basic training becasue that means you will have to run and ruck with all that extra weight. So work on running and dont think about speed think endurance and distance. If you want to do anything for upper body any ab exercises are good, push ups, inlcline push ups, dips, pull ups are all good.

yes JJ that's what I was thinking...JROTC...couldn't think of the exact letters....

well not to let you down, but Army basic is a lot easier now because there are problems recruiting. yes you still exercise, but I have heard that there are limits to what they can make you do. I've even heard some drill sergeants have to tell you what you need to do on your own to pass the PT tests because they can't make you do what they think you need to do to pass them. It seems that Army JAG is way into the fair treatment of the recruits these days. It is a lot less abusive than it used to be. My fiance is a field artillery officer, and a while back I went to visit him and I heard some guys out of boot camp saying how they aren't allowed to fail anyone anymore. You just keep retaking it until you pass.

My fiance says that the best way to pass the PT tests is to train for them. Do practice ones on your own time. For him with the push ups he says it helps to do as much as you can as quickly as possible instead of pacing yourself. You'll just have to learn tricks like that which work for you.

Many moons ago, before attending USMC boot camp, our recruiters actually had us do lots of PT (physical training) in preparation for boot. That involved a lot of running, pushups, pullups and situps. I also recall that the Marine PT test were all timed for these events and the only real way to pass them was to do LOTS of them!

To all those who have enlisted and will be attending boot camp or OTS for the first time, whichever branch of the US Armed Forces, good luck to you!

The only way to get better is to do it over and over again. bobo I used to do my pushups just like your fiance did knock as many out as you can at first because your arms will get fatigued. Once you get in the push up position you cant go to your knees or they will count what you have done and that will be it. You have to keep at least one palm on the ground at all times if you dont they will stop counting. Some guys like to start out with the normal push up position and then adjust to wide arm because they can crank out a few extra after they get tired it used to work for me. But when you train for push ups train like you test do as many as you can till you cant do anymore then the next time you do it try to do more. Dont do this on back to back days do it every other day it works. You can also drop and do 10 20 30 40 whenever you have free time it helps just doing them a lot.
